Between 1915-1916 Gertrude Jane Cook registered a shotgun at Lathrop courthouse! She later changed her name to Gertrude Haskell Cook and died in 1942; however her Gun Owners Registration card still exists today! In 1916-1920 five individuals registered shotguns at Lathrop courthouse: Geo Fenton (March 7, 1916), Harry Capps (May 9 1916), Isadore Howe (July 24 1920), Willis Purdy III (November 6 1922) & Albert Jaffe II (December 16 1924). All five weapons were destroyed during World War II but their registration cards still remain extant today! Lathrop, California is a small town located in Kern County, California. It is part of the Tulare, CA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. Lathrop is located on the eastern edge of the Mojave Desert and about 25 miles northwest of Bakersfield. The first people to live in what is now Lathrop were Native Americans who hunted and gathered plants and animals near present-day Doheny Creek. In 1849, Captain George Haines established a ranch named "Haines Ranch" just outside of Lathrop on the east side of Mulholland Dam Road. A post office was opened in 1851, and by 1865 there were 21 inhabitants living in Lathrop. In 1870 Jens Christensen started a mill that produced flour for local farmers and ranchers until it burned down in 1902. New mills began upriver in Tulare County around this time but all failed within 10 years because of competition from other lumber companies across America. In 1916 Don Gibbs founded Gibbs Dairy which became one of America's leading dairy producers before it went bankrupt in 1985. In 1925 Charles Fenton opened his first grocery store west of Los Angeles when he moved from Bakersfield to La Quinta Meadows north of Pasadena following his purchase of an open-air market northeast of Pasadena known as Farmers' Market Park (later Comeback Park). Fenton served as its General Manager until he died in 1957; his wife served as Manager until her death in 1984. In response to increased demand for food during World War II, Fenton started marketing produce such as eggs and chicken through CAB (California Agricultural Broadcasters) radio broadcasts throughout southern California; these broadcasts helped promote Californian agriculture to soldiers stationed abroad during World War II After World War II came economic recession which led to decreased demand for agricultural products statewide; however, industry did not go out Of Business like some had predicted it would do due to innovations such as refrigeration technology that made agriculture more profitable than ever before In 1969 Charles Waddell established Dickey's Barbecue pit on property adjacent to Briggsdale Elementary School after purchasing it from Mr. Briggsdale for $1 million dollars . Lathrop is a small town in the San Joaquin Valley of California, United States. The population was 3,746 at the 2010 census. Lathrop is located on the east side of the valley, about 20 miles (32 km) southeast of Fresno and 50 miles (80 km) northeast of Stockton. It is part of the Fresno–San Joaquin County Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1851 by George W. Lathrop as a farming community on land granted to him by John C. Frémont. Lathrop built his first home there in 1853 and became its first postmaster. He died in 1865, but his wife continued to operate the post office until her death in 1899. In 1892, Lathrop's son George W., Jr., founded a paper mill that became one of the leading paper mills in California; it closed operations in 1969. Lathrop was named for General James Kenedy who led American forces against Mexican forces during the Mexican-American War and Battle of Buena Vista Hill near present-day Modesto; Kenedy had also given land to George W., Jr., for incorporation into what would become Lathrop Township on January 1, 1850. The name "LATHROP" appears on several plats submitted with platting notices for San Joaquin County before 1800 including one dated October 16th, 1775 which shows an entry for "Large meadow situation".
