Lathrop is a small town in the Mono County, California, United States. Lathrop was founded by Mormon pioneers in 1847. The community was named after George A. Lathrop, an early settler and landowner in the area. The first post office opened in 1851, and the first store was built in 1853. The population of Lathrop grew slowly until the mid-19th century when it began to grow rapidly due to irrigation systems developed by John Sutter and his brother David Sutter. "In 1880," wrote one historian, "the town had a population of 150; 10 years later it had grown to 1,200." By 1915, Lathrop had reached 2,000 people and became an important stop on the railroad route between Los Angeles and Sacramento. During World War II, Lathrop played a significant role as an airfield for the USAAF during Operation Twelfth Air Force's effort against Japan. In 1951, the town annexed neighboring communities of Riceville and Blythewood to form its current boundaries. Despite the difficulties encountered during their early years living in the area, George and Anna were very proud of what they had accomplishedand continue to be so today; They are considered pioneers within the community and have been constantly active involved with its affairs ever since(). Their legacy can be seen not only through their accomplishments but also through how much Foothill Ranch has changed throughout its history- most notably changing from being primarily an agricultural community to one full of industry today ().
