The first military deployment to Lathrop took place on December 12, 1853 when a detachment of U.S. Marines arrived for supplies and Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer's Seventh Cavalry Regiment participated in maneuvers near today's Inland Empire Regional Airport. The late 1800s were a time of great change for Lathrop as two major American Civil War battles took place here. On November 11, 1861 Union General Winfield Scott Hancock ordered his army into the town andBattle of Forks ensued which left over 50 dead on both sides with many more wounded. During the following year, 1862 Confederate General Robert E Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House following a battle at Gaines Mill during which 581 civilians were killed including future Mayor Harry Fenton who was then only 8 years old. In 1865, local residents voted to become an incorporated city after petitioning by City Councilman William Jenssen who became mayoralty-holder in 1868 when James Worthy resigned from office due to illness. The incorporation process finally ended in 1875 when voters rejected a proposition proposing annexation by Thalia (now San Diego) County because they felt that it would have given Lathrop too much control over its schools and other civic institutions outside of its borders. Throughout most of the 20th century, Lathrop was home to several Federal government agencies as well as various militaries stationed here during Operation Desert Storm (1991), Operation Enduring Freedom (2001), and Operation Iraqi Freedom (2003). However, the last military deployment to town occurred on October 2nd, 2006 when United States Marine Corps troops arrived for an event commemorating World War II veteran Johnnie Cochran and his wife Nellie Mae Cochran who served as Commandant women with the First American Marines based out of Camp Pendleton before returning home after the war ended. Today, Lathrop is known primarily for its manufacturing base which includes agriculture products such as fertilizer and seed; construction materials such as asphalt and tiles; food processing plants such as Pinnacle Foods Inc.; tobacco processing facilities; and automotive components manufacturer Coil-on Automotive Inc.. Additionally, there are numerous small businesses located throughout downtown which serve local customers or provide services to larger companies within walking distance including KFC restaurants adjacent to Interstate 5 or Safeway just south of State Street across from Veterans Memorial Coliseum/Athletic Stadium/.

Lathrop is a small town in California, located on the east side of the state. The population was 1,642 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Joaquin Valley region. Lathrop was founded in 1864 by George Lathrop and his wife Rebecca (née Armstrong). The first post office opened in 1865. In 1886, Lathrop sold his interest in the town to John C. Beaumont for $1,000. The Lathrops donated land for a public school in 1903 and also built a church on their donation. In 1916, J.C. Beaumont died and his daughter Laura succeeded him as mayor of Lathrop with power over all municipal decisions including school funding and building projects until her death in 1951; she had been mayor since 1915 when Mayor Charles Waddell resigned due to ill health).
