The California National Guard has been a part of the state’s history since 1846. The first national guard unit was activated in Lathrop, California on November 1, 1846. At that time, Lathrop was located in the Mexican territory of Baja California and it was not until after the Mexican-American War that the US acquired control over this area. On February 14, 1861, more than one thousand men from throughout the United States assembled at Fort Tejon to fight for Southern Californian independence. Over time, individual units were organized into regiments and brigades (as well as a battalion) before being disbanded and reorganized again in 1915-1918. In 1938-1939, following World War II service by many American soldiers stationed in Japan and Korea, the California National Guard began providing military Aviation services to both countries under Operation Coronet Jaguar. This service continued until 1947 when it transitioned to Civil Air Patrol operations (CAP). Today’s CA National Guard is made up of approximately 27 detachments across Northern California including Vallejo; Redwood Valley; Petaluma; San Francisco; Santa Cruz; Paso Robles; Eureka; Crescent City; Ukiah and Gonzales Counties. Each detachment provides an important support function within their respective jurisdictions which helps keep our community safe while also pursuing patriotic objectives such as veterans benefits and disaster relief missions.

The California National Guard was established in 1849 as the Second Battalion of Infantry. From 1861 to 1865, it served in the Union Army during the Civil War. The battalion was disbanded in 1865 and its members became part of the First Battalion of Infantry. On July 4, 1870, the battalion was re-established as an infantry regiment and participated in the Mexican-American War. In 1881, it became a battery and from 1886 to 1889 it served as a brigade artillery regiment under command of General John J. Pershing. It was again disbanded on September 1, 1889 and its members were absorbed into other regiments within the National Guard system.
Lathrop, California (/ˈlɑːhtərɔs/; also known as Latham and Lamont) is a city in San Diego County, California. The population was 32,835 at the 2010 census. Lathrop is located on the extreme southern edge of San Diego County and east of Escondido. It is bordered by Imperial Valley to the north, Carlsbad Caverns National Park to the east, and Qualcomm University to the south. The first permanent resident in what would become Lathrop was James Atherton in 1847 when he purchased Rancho Santa Fe de las Pulgas from José Felipe Garza. Atherton named his land for his wife's brother-in-law Samuel Latham. Latham had been an officer in the Mexican War and had returned to North Americaomiing with wagonloads of gold bullion that he had smuggled into Mexico City during that conflict. In 1850, he founded a small town near present day Scripps Institution of Oceanography on Point Conception Bayou opposite present day El Cajon Naval Air Station (). His new town became known as Lamont after him because it lay midway between Scripps Institute and Point Conception Bayou (Latham Street ran along both coasts). In 1870, following completion of U.S.-Mexican War boundary negotiations between United States President Ulysses S. Grant and Mexican President Aprilia Garcia Zarate, two groups of settlers formed: those who moved to populate First Colony (later renamed Rialto) on Otay Mesa Boulevard west of Interstate 805; those who relocated to Third Colony (later renamed La Jolla) on Villa Drive east of I-805 within walking distance of Scripps Institution; and those who remained at Second Colony (later renamed La Paloma) on Big Island just outside El Cajon Naval Air Station (). The Third Colony group laid out streets gridwise around their small community center which served as their courthouse, schoolhouse, post office and general store until about 1900 when all three colonies were absorbed into La Jolla through a process called "merger." By 1907 there were over 2200 people living in La Jolla proper (), more than any other local municipality () except Los Angeles (). By 1925 there were over 6500 residents (), more than any other local municipality () except Los Angeles (). After World War II most growth took place inside Los Angeles County but some portions—such as downriver Coyote Hills—were annexed by Lathrop without municipal approval or vote(). Today much of what once made up la jolla has been developed into new neighborhoods within downtown LA: West Hollywood (); Beverly Hills (); Marina del Rey (); Echo Park (); Pacific Beach (); Pacific Heights (); Gastown ()); Rosemead ()); Fairfax ()); Temple Terrace ()); Lynwood ())). Most development has taken place within one central area bounded by Harbor Drive/City Hall Way/UCLA campus bounds to the south (west side), First Colony Road/Otay Mesa Boulevard bounds to the north (east side), Big Island boundaries to the west (southwest side), Harbor Drive/City Hall Way boundaries to LAX Airport boundaries to the northeast (−1 mile), University Circle boundaries
The U.S. national guard has a rich history that goes back to the Revolutionary War. One of the first military organizations in the United States was the 1st Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Regiment, which was originally raised in 1775 as part of the Continental Army. The regiment was disbanded in 1781 and its members transferred to other units before being re-raised in 1785 under General George Washington as part of his army for the American Revolution. In addition, other companies were raised throughout America during this time including the 1st New York Volunteers (1777), 4th Rhode Island Volunteers (1778), 2nd Pennsylvania Volunteers (1779), 3rd Connecticut Volunteers (1780), 5th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Regiment (1782-83) and 6th New Hampshire Militia Regiment (1784). During World War I, there were also numerous National Guard units mobilized for service in Europe. The National Guard Service Act of 1916 created an organized corps of military reservists who could be called into federal service on short notice for up to three years without having to serve in a regular army unit. These reservists would be mustered into service at age 21 and would serve until they reached the age of 38 or older; however, they did not enjoy seniority over regular soldiers and could only be used in case of war mobilization with no possibility of return home until hostilities ceased. After World War I, many states began calling their own National Guardsmen into federal service as needed through various means such as state militias or volunteer regiments recruited from localities within their borders. This process continued through World War II when all 50 states formed citizen militias known as reserve divisions or reserve troops depending on how much manpower each state felt it needed to maintain general readiness should war break out againe. After World War II, many National Guard units were disbanded but some remain active today including Maryland’s 132nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team which is currently deployed training Iraqi forces near Baghdad; New York’s 9th Airborne Division which is stationed at Fort Drum outside Oftown, NY; Florida’s 815th Infantry Brigade Combat Team which is Deployed Training with Kuwait's 5th Armored Cavalry Division; Utah’s 84th Field Artillery Regiment which is currently training Iraqi security forces near Fallujah; Colorado’s 1005TH Aviation Wingwhich provides aerial refueling support to coalition air operations against ISIL militants near Ar Ramadi ; Iowa's 172nd Infantry Brigade Combat Teamwhich contains elements from both Regular Army infantry battalions and Iowa State Troopersand will participate in Operation Noble Eagle tomorrow night when they take over control from Texas Rangers guarding an oil refinery located just east of Dallas
