Lathrop, California is a small town in the Kern County, California region. The population was 1,714 as of the 2010 census. It is located in the eastern Sierra Nevada mountains and occupies a valley between the towns of Bakersfield and Visalia. Lathrop is about an hour's drive from Bakersfield and about two hours from Visalia. The town was founded by John A. Lathrop in 1879 as a post office called Lathropville on the east side of State Route 168 near present-day Redding. He named it for his brother-in-law, George Wetherald Latham, who had also founded Green Valley some miles to the west on State Route 198. Today much of what used to be Lathrop depends on irrigation water delivered via canals built by Southland Water District (SWD) and other private interests. Lathrop has grown since its establishment but retains a small town feel with many farmers living hereabouts and various businesses catering to their needs such as real estate agents, grocery stores, gas stations/convenience stores, etc., which are scattered throughout the village center; three elementary schools - one public and two private - serve grades K-12; one quasi-public high school serving grades 9-12; an 8x8 arena/park with tennis courts, soccer fields, basketball courtage (for local team play), a softball diamond and a playground; two churches: First Baptist Church serving communion services primarily during school days while Stonington Presbyterian Church operates both daycare facilities for preschool children as well as meeting rooms for community events; several libraries including Northridge Library Service District (NRD) Branch 2 which provides books for free or low cost to residents of unincorporated areas adjoining Northridge at any time during daylight hours; six wells supplying water for use by villagers through SWD’s Permian Basin Aquifer Conservation Authority program; fire Department consisting of one truck with four hose lines capable of dealing with up to twenty fires per day plus one repeater line providing coverage within five miles radius around all village limits plus an adjacent twelve acre parcel providing firefighters access to emergency medical service if necessary when fires break out within that radius "What began as simple country mail delivery became something more." -John A.
