When the Lathrop Volunteer Fire Department was formed in 1903, they had to look for a way to give back to their community. They came up with the idea of a shooting gallery, which would allow people of all ages to have a chance at shooting guns. The first building that housed the Gallery was built in 1911. It was located on Hwy 36 between Lathrop and Pico Rivera. In 1916, the VFD moved into their current building on Nordhoff Ave., which is still used today as the VFD Headquarters. The VFD has been keeping score at various ranges throughout California since 1922 when they began participating in statewide competitions known as “The Great American Shootout”. This event allowed shooters from all over America to compete against each other in what was then an extremely important event for small-town firefighters. From 1957-1974, Lathrop hosted its own annual firearms competition known as “The Cowboy Shootout” which drew top shooters from across the United States together for a weekend of shootin’ fun and competition! In 1984, Lathrop became one of only 10 communities in California (along with Riverside and Victorville) to adopt County Ordinance 9362 which provided for local firearm possession restrictions within city limits. These regulations were put into place following a deadly shootout between two groups of handguns owners near downtown Lathrop on Christmas Day 1983. Shortly thereafter, Mayor Harry Weisner resigned after admitting he knew about this gunfight and had knowledge that weapons could be obtained without permits through purchases made by members of his staff! Following Mayor Weisner’s resignation, City Manager John Sizemore took over and worked tirelessly to continue enforcing county ordinance 9362 while also working towards creating new rules and regulations that would keep our community safe. In 2001, City Council voted unanimously to adopt Resolution 1024 recognizingocide (the terrorist act committed by Septic Tanker Bomber Richard Reid) as an event related violence against law enforcement officers throughout California; this resolution marked the first time any municipality had ever declared such an incident involving law enforcement officers during peacetime! Lathrop, California is a city in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 11,038 at the 2010 census. Lathrop is part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Kern County were Spanish explorers in 1769 and 1770. When they surveyed the area they noted that there was a great deal of wood in the hills and they named it Rancho San Francisco de las Palomas because of its location near Mission San Francisco de Asís (now downtown Los Angeles). A post office was established at Rancho San Francisco de las Palomas on October 10, 1859, and remained open until December 12, 1861. In 1871 J. P. Morgan sent his nephew Wm Husted to explore some land about 21 miles northeast of Lathrop for him; he returned with news that he had found an immense goldfield just east of Bakersfield on what became known as the Verdugo Mountains (). In 1872 Jepson organized a group including James Fenton and John Sutter to prospect for gold in what is now Kern County; this group began work on a road from Bakersfield over the mountains to their new discovery (). A post office called Lathrop was established at Lathrop on November 7, 1872 (), and operated until 1888. The first settlers were Easterners who worked along the Verdugo Road (); many of them built homes around what is now Main Street (). After years of effort by local citizens and businessmen(), settlement began building up around town when water rights became available () from State Water District No. 1 (). By 1886 there were stores, hotels, churches and schools located within one-half mile (1 kilometer) of each other (), making Lathrop one of the most developed towns in Kern County (). After decades of growth., development started to slowdown beginning in 1958 due to increased competition from other metropolitan areas; however much later when state government funding resumed following passage of Proposition 13 (), growth recommenced again with businesses opening up shop along Interstate 5 ().
