Lathrop was founded in 1887 as a station on the Southern Pacific Railroad. In 1912, it became an incorporated municipality. Lathrop is located in central Kern County and is surrounded by the hills of the Siskiyou Mountains to the east and north, and Oak Flat National Forest to the west. North of Lathrop are the Antelope Valley Desert and Salinas Valley National Wildlife Refuge. According to The History of Kern County, Volume II (1892), "The first white settlers in this locality were George Waddell and his brother-in-law James Irvine who arrived about 1840 from Kentucky." By 1868 there were 10 families living hereabouts with 7 farmsteads totaling 5 acres each; these had been built around a large salt mine which yielded over two million pounds of salt per year during its heyday in 1853-58! It should be noted that Saltville was then not including present day Lathrop when this report was prepared so any errors may have crept into this document since 1899 when it would have been updated to reflect current boundaries
