Lawndale is a small town in Kern County, California, located in the East Bay region of Northern California. The population was 2,582 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Francisco–Oakland–Hayward Metropolitan Statistical Area. The townsite was first settled by Native Americans in 1847 and incorporated as a city on April 14, 1951. The name honors Judge George M. Lawndale (1851-1930) who served on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors from 1922 to 1930 and was then mayor from 1930 to 1932. Prior to that he had been justice of the peace for San Mateo County from 1912 to 1916 and editor of "The Californian" newspaper from 1907 to 1911 Lawndale's history can be traced back further than this however; it has been mentioned in documents dating back to 1795 as part of Rancho Vegas de las Pulgas which was granted by Mexican Governor Manuel Nieto to José Joaquin Mora y Baca with 400 acres (160 ha). It wasn't until 1870 when entrepreneur James Wolk started building ranches east of Madera Creek and named them after himself - Rancho Los Alamitos de Las Pulgas (now Lawndale) and Rancho Rincon del Diablo de las Pulgas (now Arroyito Heights). In 1908 Wolk sold his interest in these ranches to developer Myron Eisner who built one of Northern California's most popular suburbs - Pacific Heights - directly across Madera Creek from Lawndale In 1951 City Manager Harry Fenton proposed annexing neighboring hillsside communities such as Pleasanton and Cupertino so that all residents would live within walking distance of each other regardless of job or family situation. This proposal received great support but due to an intervening Supreme Court decision, only two blocks were annexed - North Hayward (later North Berkeley) and South Hayward (laterSouth Berkeley). With only 827 people living in Lawndale at its incorporation it became one of the smallest cities in California But even before it began facing competition from larger neighbor cities, Lawndale had begun experiencing some success with its own sports teams including baseball (), basketball (), soccer () & softball (). After seeing firsthand how successful these leagues could be, Fenton decided that annexing nearby hillsside communities would open up more space for development while still providing a community atmosphere without sacrificing quality baseball or basketball games or soccer matches Today lawndaile’s economy revolves around its schools: many businesses have moved into downtown because there is now much more parking available off-street than necessary on Main Street
