Lawndale is a small city in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles County, California. It is located on the border of Calabasas and Sylmar neighborhoods. The population was 93,827 at the 2010 census[1] and 114,958 in 2016. Lawndale was incorporated as an unincorporated village on April 14, 1907. The name comes from a rancho named Rancho la Nieve,[2] which was adjacent to what is now Lawndale Avenue. The community became an agricultural center due to its location near two major water supplies for irrigation: Santa Susana Creek and San Bernardino River. In 1892, Harry Chandler established a citrus orchard here that yielded more than 100,000 oranges per year.[3][4][5] In 1904, General Electric built their first factory in Lawndale with production beginning in 1906.[6] With rapid growth in the early 20th century came civic improvements such as libraries (1898), schools (1905), fire stations (1915), andangerous dwellings being replaced by nicer homes. However, during World War II many businesses closed because of military requirements for space; parts of Lawndale were destroyed by bombing raids over 43 days in 1942-43[7]. After the war ended, much of the infrastructure had to be rebuilt including new roads and public squares like Pioneer Square[8]. In recent years there has been development along La Brea Boulevard with law firm buildings popping up all over town; but it remains largely residential with heavy industry having left behind few traces except for some abandoned warehouses along Mulholland Drive which have become popular tourist destinations [9].

Lawndale is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 7,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fresno-Madera-Rosamond Metropolitan Statistical Area. Lawndale is known for its citrus groves and its contribution to early Hollywood. The first settlers in Lawndale wereMexican Americans who arrived in 1847. James Wolk built his cabin near the present day intersection of Highway 66 and Avenue C in what is now Lawndale. In 1853, John Pemberton bought land on which he erected a two story wooden frame house named "Pemberton's Cabin". The first post office was established at this location on May 8, 1853 by Jens Ludwig Fuhrman with the name "Fresno". In 1865, George Hargrave moved to Lawndale from nearby Moberly with his family and started a grocery store called "Hargrave's Grocery" on Main Street which remains open today as Central Grocery Co. In 1894, Simeon Baird opened a general store here which became known as Baird & Son Store. This business continued until 1926 when it was purchased by Hmong American Merchants Association who renamed it Hmong American Stores Incorporated Baird also operated an elevator company based out of his store until 1901 when he retired and sold the business to Harry Weems who operated it until 1955 when it closed down due to lack of customers In 1928, lawyer Jens Ludwig Fuhrman founded Fuhrman & Sons law firm here w/ six attorneys that continue to practice law today There have been many changes over time within the community with Lawndale slowly becoming more diverse over the years including gentrification; however there has never been any major change or displacement of residents since its inception
