At its peak in the early 1920s, Lawndale was one of the most populous cities in America and had a population of over 100,000 people. Today, Lawndale has a population of around 10,000 people and is considered an agricultural town with scattered businesses clustered around rural farms. The town is located about 20 miles south-southwest of Fresno and 30 miles east-northeast of Stockton. The history of Lawndale begins with pioneers who arrived in 1849. The first white settlers were cattle ranchers who made their home on Rancho San Pablo west of present day Lawndale. In 1853, John Cranch discovered gold near the modern day intersection of Utopia Road and State Route 99. This led to increased activity in the area as men began prospecting for gold and other minerals. By 1870, there were over 25 miners operating outposts throughout what is now Lawndale County. The townsite was platted by Hyrum Stephens on November 7, 1875 as part of his grant to ranchers James Fenton and David Lasater in connection with theiroming section 9 (now also part of Fresno). The name “Lawndale” was given to it by Stephens because he found two old deer bones at the site which he thought would make a good place to store goods during winter months when roads were not open due to snowmelt or ice jams caused by heavy rains or floods from nearby rivers.
