Lawndale is a town in Los Angeles County, California. It is located on the east side of the Santa Monica Mountains and it is bordered by Encino to the north, Brentwood to the east, Hawthorne to the south, and Pacific Palisades to the west. Lawndale, California is a small town in the San Joaquin Valley of California. The town was founded by James W. Lawton in 1887 and it became part of Fresno County in 1893. The population was 10,817 at the 2010 census. It is located on the east side of Fresno County and on the west side of San Joaquin County. The townsite where Lawndale now stands was first settled by Native Americans in 1821. A adobe house built by José Arguello in 1875 remains an important local landmark. The first postoffice was established here on July 12, 1887, under the name of North Lawndale. In 1893, Fresno County earthquake destroyed most of what is now Lawndale and much surrounding land including Northridge and East Palo Alto; however, portions of Lawndale were still living according to their Indian Reservations until 1898 when they all came together to form one new Indian Reserve called Rancho Santa Cruz de los Andes which included present-day Lawndale as well as parts of East Palo Alto and Northridge. The railroad arrived here in 1902 which led to a rapid growth for this small town; businesses such as hotels, restaurants, stores and cotton fields soon sprang up around the original train depot northeast of downtown (now known as Pioneer Hall). In 1916–1917, during World War I, many American soldiers stationed at Camp Kearny died or were injured here from exposure due to an armistice that ended the war near nearby Stockton; their bodies lay unburied for many days until hastily dug graves could be found just outside town limits near Coyote Hills Cemetery before being moved into individual graves over time until finally being put into final interment within minutes after troops had left camp that day!
