The first permanent resident in Lawndale was George Richards who arrived from England in 1847 and homesteaded land near what is now Pico Boulevard and Temple Street. Richardsestablished a law practice in 1849 and helped to start the first Bank of Lawndale with Wm. H. Weiser and A[nton] Fenton. In 1852 Richards married Lydia Mott who moved to Lawndale from Ontario, Canada with her family two years later.
