The Committee's report called for about two square miles (4 km²) north of where present day Lawndale stands to be developed as a town center with a central square surrounded by streets running east-west and north-south; four blocks wide each between Second Street and Third Street; six blocks wide between Fourth Street and Fifth Street; eight blocks wide between Sixth Street and Seventh Streets; ten blocks wide between EighthStreetand Ninth Streets; twelve blocks wide between TenthStreetand Eleventh Streets In December 1855, acting Governor John Witte set out with instructions to purchase 640 acres (248 ha) south of First Avenue east of Arroyo Seco Creek for what would become Lawndale. Lawndale, California is a small town in the San Joaquin Valley of California. The population was 10,811 at the 2010 census. It is located in Kern County. The town was founded in 1887 by John Leland and his wife Eliza Jane Lawndale, two daughters of English immigrants who had settled in the region. There were only thirty-six people living in Lawndale when it was founded. By 1910, the population had increased to 1,055 and by 1930 to 2,033. The post office closed on December 14, 1957. What made Lawndale so successful as a small town? One of the main reasons was its location: it was located just outside of Bakersfield on a route that connected Los Angeles with Southern California and points eastward. This connection helped make Lawndale one of the largest towns within commuting range for many residents; even though it lacked any large commercial districts or shopping areas, residents managed to maintain their close relationship with their larger neighbors through various forms of civic engagement . Lawndale was a small town in Sonoma County, California, United States, that is now part of the city of San Francisco. It was first settled by European Americans in 1851. The name comes from the Spanish word "lawn" and "dale", meaning "a valley". The first post office at Lawndale was established on November 15, 1851, under the name of Redwood City. The present day Lawndale Post Office building was built in 1902. A railroad depot served Lawndale for many years. A number of early pioneers were born here including John Fitch and his family who arrived in 1850 from Ohio; George Stephenson who came to California with his father in 1852; Peter Minnich who arrived in 1854; James Irvine (1835-1911), an American Civil War veteran and entrepreneur who founded what is today Orange County’s largest wine company; and Wm. Halsey Wellman (1834-1908), a merchant and banker who had several businesses near what is now Market Street. In 1872 Charles Fillmore organized a wagon train carrying wheat to Stockton, California for shipment to Mexico during the Mexican Revolution.
