Lawndale is a small town in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 12,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Riverside-San Bernardino-Ontario Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlement in Lawndale was made in 1887 when J.D. Harmon and his family arrived from Illinois to homestead on what is now Main Street. The name "Lawndale" originated with a land grant given by Governor Manuel Nieto to James Laughlin in 1892. After Laughlin's death in 1902, the grant passed through several owners before it was sold to John Pemberton and his wife Mary Ewing Pemberton in 1909. They named their new town after their father-in-law, Lawrence Davenport Lawford of Connecticut, who had settled near Lawndale about two miles away in 1840s on land that would eventually be renamed Lawndale Heights development area; this distinction still exists today as one of the most well-known neighborhoods within the community limits. As early as 1912, there were plans for an irrigation system to be built along Rolling Drive which would have irrigated much of central San Bernardino County; however these plans never came to fruition because of World War I economic disruptions and bad weather conditions throughout California during that time period. In 1925, Sixty Mile Rd., which runs parallel to Indian Hill Rd., became known as "The Strip". This designation comes from its location just off Interstate 10 just east of State Route 66 (SR 66), a short distance north of where today's Business District sits on Topanga Ave., east of SR 167 (now US 101), south of Yorba Linda Regional Airport and west of Arroyo Gordillo Road ((LA RJR). It quickly became realized that this strip could be developed into an even more comprehensive commercial district than what already existed adjacent thereto; this resulted in developer Harry Wiggin investing over $2 million into developing what would become known as The Strip Avenue Development Company Limited Partnership or "the Wiggin Group". This company purchased 320 acres (12 km²) east and northeast of SR 166/I-10 interchange from various landowners including Mrs.(or Mr.) Jens Christensen for $27 per acre plus interest (equivalent to $265 per year at present prices). With this purchase they secured access to both I-10 mainline travel and business traffic while also providing essential industrial gridlock relief for all nearby residents during those years when arteries such as I-5 or SR 66 bypassed town altogether due major construction projects elsewhere within Southern California during that time period! In 1942 local resident Bob Walters started purchasing property southeast of intersection Of FM 571 And FM 921 From Darrell Kriegle For $1 Per Acre Plus Interest! He continued To Purchase Property totaling 105 spots until his death In 1995!!! His Wife Gail ran The Home Place next door Until 2003 When Their Daughter Kathy took Over!!! In 2006 That Spot Was Sold To Another Family Who Claimed To Be Related To Bob But We Could Not Verify That!! So Next Door Is Now Our Current Homefront
