The Marine Corps has been a part of the American society since its inception. The first Marines were commissioned in 1846 and served until 1898, when the Marine Corps was created as a separate service. In Lawndale, California, the Marine Barracks have been serving the community for over 100 years. In 1902, War College Professor Rear Admiral David Denny organized a gift-giving event in honor of his friend Commodore John W. Sloat, who had died that year. This was followed by another event in 1903 in memory of Commodore George Dewey. Lawndale is a town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 71 at the 2010 census. It is part of the LA-FtLA-CA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first white person to live in Lawndale was Captain John Sutter, who established the Sutter's Fort Colony on Rancho del Norte in 1844. The name "Lawndale" was given to him by his friend and predecessor as captain of Sutter's Fort, Gabriel Moraga. In 1847, Augustus Pritchard founded a post office at Lawndale after traveling through the area and finding that there were no other settlements nearby with an official post office. The first mail service from Stockton arrived here on November 15, 1847. The short but rich history of Lawndale begins with two brothers, William Hogg and George Hogg, who ran a successful mercantile business here from 1865 to 1888. They are buried next to each other in the Pioneer Cemetery off South Main Street. Their businesses included groceries (Hogg's Mercantile), wagon transportation (Hogg's Wagon Route), real estate (Hogg/Wright Real Estate) and banking (George Hogg Trust Company). The Post Office address has been changed numerous times over the years including 1911 to 1914 before settling on it current location; 1912 to 1946 before being moved again; 1951 to 1959; 1966 until 1978 when it became lawndalepostofficecomicbookstore (#7). In 1946 their son Don Hogg took over their father's business which continued until 1993 when it merged into Safeway Corporation From 1886 until 1907 Mexican immigrants named Ramirez started moving into Lawndale because they found fertile land here for agriculture near Crystal City and need not laboriously journey east for work or housing in search of opportunity like many others had done since American independence up until then. One such immigrant was Manuel Ramirez who settled in Lawndale around 1886 followed shortly thereafter by his wife Ceferina Ramos and their six children: Ramon(1887-1970), Cecilia(1889-1948), Francisco Xavier(1891-1972), Isabela Concepcion(1893-1976), Juana Josefa Concepcion( 1895-1978)and Miguel Angel Ramirez y Arellano ( 1897-1981 ). These familiesestablished agribusinesses such as Alcalá & Ramos Bros., ranchers Garcia & Ramos Co., Herrera Farms Inc., Pico de la Mesa Irrigation District No 6 Agricultural Products association AG&R Farms CO . Many descendants still live here today among them attorney Hector Ortiz , currently running for state assembly seat 2c #15 against 10 year incumbent Ricardo Lara
