Lawndale is a small city in northern California, located on the edge of the Mojave Desert. It was founded in 1887 by J.P. Lawndale is a city in Los Angeles County, California. The population was 116,824 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest city in Los Angeles County after downtown LA. The original Lawndale name was "Laguna". In 1887, entrepreneur and businessman Harry Chandler bought 640 acres of Rancho San Miguel (now part of University Park) near present day Lawndale for $12,000. He named his new development Laguna because it surrounded a small freshwater lagoon on which he had built a seasonal manse and summer home. The first post office called Laguna was established in 1892. The name was changed to Lawndale in 1907 when it became an incorporated town. In 1909, two men from San Francisco by the name of Haggerty purchased 1/2 mile (1 km) east of where Laguna now stands on land that had been acquired by Judge William Cranch from Juan Vargas for $5 per acre ($225 per km²). They named their holdings Zapata and began construction of what would become one of Southern California's most famous courthouse buildings – the old Lasky Building on Main Street today known as the La Brea Tar Pits building – only to have it destroyed in a fire Incident on May 7, 1911 while they were away from their property to judgment hearing. It wasn't until 1922 that Mexican-American lawyer Enrique Gomez moved into Zapata with his wife Nieves and young son Pablo to open what became known as El Centro de la Juventud or "the Center of Youth" due to its location just off Sepulveda Boulevard across from UCLA’s Moorhead School Of Medicine then still under construction adjacent to what is now UCLA Medical School campus; later renamed lawNDALE after Mayor Edward J . At this time there were no schools within Lawndale boundaries other than those operated by either UCLA or Moorhead School Of Medicine so Elementary students attending these two schools proceeded through local high school districts… By 1940 there were six elementary schools within boundaries of Lawndale while five high schools served all areas outside Limits [of]Lawndaile….Today there are twelve elementary Schools within limits plus several additional middle/junior high Schools located throughout Greater Los Angeles
