In 1887, when it was established, Lawndale consisted of just six houses scattered around a dirt lot on what is now Seventh Street near County Route 190A. By 1920, however, the town had grown to include over 1,000 residents within its boundaries; by 1930 it boasted an assessed valuation of $837 ($27 per capita) – more than any other incorporated community in California at that time! One reason for this growth was undoubtedly the railroad which arrived in Lawndale just after World War I and quickly brought new jobs and commerce to the area. The Railroadtown development that followed saw many construction projects undertaken including a movie theater (the first ever built in central California), two churches (St Patrick’s Catholic Church and Our Lady Of Angels Parish), three schools (John Witherspoon School District #2 School #1 & #2), two grocery stores/cafés (Grocery store operated by Mr. Koppelstall & Mrs. Hirschfeldt and Secondhand bookstore operated by Mrs Blanchard), four residences (all single-family homes at that time) as well as numerous businesses such as hardware store(Mr Ladd & Son)and laundry services! All told there were over fifty buildings erected or renovated during those years! Today much of what once existed within Lawndale has been replaced with modern facilities such as downtown shopping malls and medical centers but enough remain to offer some insight into its past inhabitants: from Mr Ladd’s Hardware Store on Seventh Street where “you could buy everything from nails to hinges” until Mrs Blanchard took over operation of Second Hand bookstore after her husband passed away in 1976 she ran it continuously unchanged for nearly seventy years!

The town quickly became a center of trade and culture, and it prospered until World War II when it fell into disrepair.
