Lawndale is a city in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 40,711 at the 2010 census. The City of Lawndale was incorporated on November 3, 1922. It is located in the San Gabriel Valley east of downtown Los Angeles and north of Pasadena. The name "Lawndale" may be derived from Jedediah Law (1795-1868), an American pioneer who owned land in what is now Lawndale and named his farm after Jedediah Morse, a Revolutionary War soldier and patriot. A post office called Lawndale was established in 1872, and remained open until it closed in 1901. In 1886 Wm Hite erected a gristmill on the now defunct Little Bear Ranch east of present day Covina; this mill operated until 1907 when it was destroyed by fire. In 1906 the law firm of Prentice & Budd became associated with Harry Chandler who had built an adobe brick building on Main Street adjacent to the old Hite mill which served as their office until 1913 when they moved to their current building at 5th Avenue and Westflower Boulevard. A year laterlawrence McCormick organized a Union League Club which met at his home every Tuesday evening from October 20 through December 4th inclusive; this club promoted social intercourse among working people within the city limits." McCormick also raised money for local charities by holding lawn tennis tournaments which he staged across town each summer between 1911 and 1916 drawing attention to various causes near and far. It wasn't until 1915 that lawrence McCormick founded what is considered to be LA's first professional football team when he purchased rights to play games against visiting teams from nearby Burbank High School under the banner of Hollywood Football Club.; these first football games were played at Dodger Stadium on July 26th 1915 . After purchasing rights from Burbank High School LA hosted its first intercitybowl game against Pittsburgh on September 8th 1916 before moving into Memorial Coliseum for their next two seasons (1916-1917). In 1919 Hollywood Football Club disbanded due to financial troubles however some players transferred back to Dodger Stadium where they continued playing as part of newly formed Southern California All-America Football Conference.(ASAC) With time many members decided to move back east where there were more opportunities for success so Hollywood Football Club reformed again in 1933 as Orange County Gridiron League
