The Coast Guard was founded in 1915 as the Harbor Patrol. In 1923, they were renamed the Coast Guard Auxiliary and in 1949, they became the Coast Guard. The first coast guard gift was a watch for Lieutenant Commander Edward J. Smith of the USCGC Echo (C-5) on December 5, 1923. He was presented with it by Rear Admiral John W. Cobb of the USCGC Gila (A-3). In 1951, Captain Artemas Wickersham was awarded a gift certificate for $1,000 to be used towards future gifts. This type of gift is still given today as thank yous to Coast Guardsmen who have contributed their time and services to our community. Since then, many different types of gifts have been given to members of the Coast Guard including watches, radios, sunglasses and even bicycles! It is truly an honored tradition that continues today with special significance to those who serve our country and community.

Lemon Grove, California is a small town located in Orange County, California. The population was 5,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1887 by citrus farmers who named their new settlement Lemon Grove because of the fruit trees they had growing there. The name stuck and the town has been called Lemon Grove ever since. Lemon Grove is home to two high schools: Lemon Grove High School and Centenary Valley High School. There are also several smaller schools in the community including John F. Kennedy Middle School, Northridge Christian Schools and Stonington Elementary School which serve grades K-5th grade students from Lemon Grove and surrounding areas. The lemon grove that now stands in Lemon Grove was first planted on an open field near what is now Centennial Valley High School in 1888 by members of the local citrus farming families. By 1918, when it became evident that somesection of the original grove would not yield as much fruit as expected due to diseases or poor planting practices, a fence was erected around the property to prevent theft by other farmers and their animals during harvesting season. In 1932, when Centenary Valley merged with nearby Willowbrook into one school district, Lemon Grove residents voted to annexation into that district; however this decision was overturned on appeal and Lemongrove remains within Orange County today as a separate village subject to its own zoning laws (and governance mechanisms). In 1984, after years of work by then-Mayor Virgil Goode led to passage of Proposition 218 – which repealed all bilingual education programs statewide – Lemongrove residents voted overwhelmingly in favor of becoming unilingual again under English only banner effective December 1st followin’s a process where all residents were given an opportunity to voice their opinions at public hearings throughout November/December 2008; following these votes opening negotiations for acquisition of land began between Lemongrove villagers andCentury Valley HSDP with plans for construction beginning shortly thereafter once agreements were reached between both groups regarding use/ layout/ budgeting etc… Finally on July 25th 2009 groundbreaking took place for newly constructed Lemongroove Village Hall located next door to Century Valley HSDP while still under construction! Today over 500 people live within walking distance or just minutes away from delicious lemon products made here at our local lemon company! The modern era of coast guard gift history begins with World War II when coastal communities across America offered goods in hopes of helping American war efforts. The war gave rise to new opportunities for commerce and friendship between nations, which led to unprecedented generosity from civilians. Gifts from everyday citizens helped keep soldiers fed and clothed, built roads and shelters during winter storms,and more. During the 1960s through 1990s there was a major shift in how holiday gifts were given across cultures throughout North America . Lemon Grove is a small town in central California, located about twenty miles outside of San Francisco. The name is derived from the lemon tree that grows there and has been used since before the arrival of Europeans to describe this area. The first European to visit Lemon Grove was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo on October 25, 1542. He named it Isla de las Tejas because he thought the trees growing there resembled those near his ship, the Santa Clara. The first white man to live in or around Lemon Grove was Captain John Crespo who arrived in 1769 and claimed it as part of Rancho Las Pulgas y Arellano. A year later, José Antonio Narváez discovered citrus fruitgrowing here and made an agreement with Narváez in order to purchase some land from him for $2 per acre. In 1821, Don José Ortega y Gasset built a ranch house here which still stands today. In 1847, James Wolkart purchased a piece of land east of Lemon Grove from Juan Bautista de Anza for $1 per acre. Wolkart developed what is now known as Wolkart Valley into crops and cattle farming before moving his family to Modesto in 1867 after becoming successful at mining gold near Sacramento. In 1880, he sold much of his property including Lemon Grove to Jardine & Hastings who renamed it Polynesia after their new resort on Tahiti where they spent many years vacationing with their friends and family. When Polynesia closed its doors in 1942 due to World War II shortages, most of its assets were lost but some are still extant such as the originalranch house which still stands today next door to Jardine’s History Museum (now called the James Wolkart Museum). In 1951, when California became an independent state under president Dwight Eisenhower, Lemon Grove reverted back to its original name: Isla de las Tejas (Island of the Limes). It remained unchanged until 1984 when Jardine & Hastings sold all their holdings except for one small parcel adjacent thereto (containing what is now known as Joe’s Pizza) back to local farmers through a public auction held at Stanford University yards away from campus so that townsfolk could continue enjoying fresh produce at their local markets during summer months
Lemon Grove is a small town in Orange County, California, located on the east bank of the Tuolumne River. The name comes from Lemon Tree Hill, which was once part of what was known as Lemon Grove. The first people to live in Lemon Grove were the Hetch Hetchy water company employees who built their homes on high ground overlooking the river. There are faint traces of evidence that humans have been living here for over 10,000 years. In 1872, when Don Pedro Fonda sold his land around Crystal Springs Dam to George C. Barker and others for $2 million dollars, they laid out a town called Fruitvale on much of what is now Lemon Grove. The name Fruitvale was derived from a grove of trees near by that were used for fruit picking back then. In 1874, Gold Rush fever reached Lee Valley and many people came down with it including some residents of Fruitvale and nearby Aurora Station; however most stayed within the boundaries of their townships or villages until after February 17th 1877 when gold started arriving in large numbers at Leland Stanford's new mining camp called Oroville where he had leased land from Joaquín de la Vega y Martinez (1768-1846), one of Mexican independence heros during the Mexican Revolution. When news spread about this discovery throughout California, many menaced to leave their families behind went ahead and did just that making lemon groves all over California! A post office called "Lemon Grove" was established in 1865; however it does not appear to have served any residents until 1887 when it became part of Hollywood. It continued serving Hollywood until 1912 when it merged with nearby Glassell Park into Hollywood Hills Post Office which still serves today as an important mail service center for Orange County postal services! Lemon Grove incorporated as a municipality in 1909 and remained so until becoming an independent city on January 1st 1978!
