Lemon Grove, California is a small town in southern Kern County, California, United States. The population was 905 at the 2010 census. It is located on the banks of the Tuolumne River andadjacent to Yosemite National Park. The history of Lemon Grove goes back to 1879 when citrus fruit trees were planted by J.D. Payne and Wm. Hays with help from William Sargent (the first postmaster in the area). There are several stories about how Lemon Grove got its name: One story says that lemonade sellers in nearby Fresno named their drink after a grove of lemon trees in Lemon Grove; another story has it that discoverers of Gold Rush era San Francisco found a still-standing building called "Lemon Grove" while exploring for timber near Half Moon Bay. In any case, as early as 1881, Lemon Grove had a name and residents started using it for their own place within less than two years of its establishment. When the town was platted in 1911, most of what is now downtown was built over an agricultural drainage ditch which served as part of town's water supply until 1913. Today much of old downtown consists of well-preserved Queen Anne style dwellings dating back to before World War II and characterizing styles such as Stick Style or Craftsman Architecture which have not been seen since then in most American towns or cities due primarily to development pressures adjacent to schools, shopping malls and other urban amenities during that time period. In 1935 there were only 100 people living in Lemon Grove; by 1940 there were 1,500 people living there including 5 business men who operated five grain elevator businesses outfitted with new equipment donated by farmers across Kern County; these men developed what would become known as "the business community." The Depression led to radio silence among many businesses but this didn't stop these gentlemen from donating new equipment - this time for use at local high school football games! These days we can enjoy live music performances by some top local bands at Forbes High School amphitheater every Friday night during summer months! In 1941 Cornerstone Savings Bank opened up shop on Main Street followed six years later by First National Bank (now Wells Fargo) which became one of the town's largest employers when it moved into its current location on Broadway Avenue in 1955 The first comprehensive study ever done on female drivers was conducted hereabouts entitled "A Study Carrying Out under Directionof Mr Fenton Howe" A major milestone for our community came about when our Ladies Auxiliary formed effective October 1st 1959 through unanimous vote thereof by allldaing citizens present at meeting attended bv Mrs Gertrude Price headmistress Sisters Of Our Lady Of Loretto sisters attending from elsewhere
