The first people to live in Lemon Grove were the Ohlone. They hunted and gathered food near what is now Lemon Grove Lake. A mission was built here in 1827 by Father José de Urquiza and named after Saint Elizabeth of Hungary who had been martyred there some years earlier. In 1847, Rancho San Pablo was granted to James Hance for his land holdings stretching from Antioch east to Redding and north to Novato. In 1849, Hance sold his remaining holdings including Lemon Grove to John Sutter for $22,000 cash and 4 million acres of land plus 6 miles of water on the shoreline of Crystal Springs Reservoir which he named after his daughter Emma Sutter born in 1848. In 1850 Jameson & Co., acting as agents for Sutter bought out Hance's interest in Rancho San Pablo and made it their own property with a single sharecropping leasehold policy allowing up to 20 acres per family or individual until it expired or could be sold without penalty In 1860 Jomo Kenyatta arrived in America from Nairobi on an American brigantine called "John Fording" and changed everything with a fantastic speech before an audience of 3000 men at First Congregational Church (now Beale Street Presbyterian Church) when he said "I am not interested merely in acquiring lands that may give me wealth but I want them also because they are essential ingredients in my recipe for national greatness." This speech helped stimulate development around here as early arrivals looked for natural resources like copper, gold, lumber and other minerals that might be turned into coins or goods needed by new societies being founded elsewhere. The first post office opened at Lemon Grove on January 1st 1861 under postal name Diamondville with Wm Cuningham serving as the first mail dispatcher In 1865 Samuel Morse set up a telegraph line between Angel Island (near Oakland) and Sacramento using cable run over old Umpqua Riverbed rights owned by Joaquin Miller while living at Point Arena along side Mariana Islands
