It is part of the Sierra Nevada foothills area and lies on the western edge of Mono County. The town was founded in 1887 by John C. Lemon and his wife Anna Currie Lemon as a citrus orchard village on the east side of the Siskiyou Mountains just south of present-day Cottonwood Heights. The first recorded settlement in what is now Lemon Grove was made by two men named Hargrave and Tatum in 1885. They prospected for minerals near present-day Cottonwood Heights and found some gold but no silver. Thereafter, Hargrave's brother John Atherton started mining here also but only produced small amounts of metal until he sold out to Pemberton in 1902. Lemon Grove comes from "lemon" which means orange or grapefruit in Spanish and "grove" meaning forest or plantation. The name likely derived from an association with oranges because these fruits were grown wild hereabouts before being domesticated about 6000 years ago according to archeological evidence unearthed along the way.. In 1887, John C. Lemon set up a lemon orchard village on the east side of Siskiyou Mountains just south of present-day Cottonwood Heights with his wife Anna Currie Lemon; their children Reuben (1886), Lewis (1889), Esther (1892), Emanuel (1895) and Harry J.(1900). These early settlers are credited with inventing canned tomatoes which they marketed originally through their lemon groves across Southern California
