It is part of the Fresno-Madera, CA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The history of Lemon Grove begins with three families who settled there in 1871: the Lumsons, the Chappels and the Browns. The first post office was established in 1872. Lemon Grove began to grow rapidly after it became a result of construction of Spanish Fort Road in 1907 by the Southern Pacific Railroad. In 1924, Congress designated Lemon Grove as an agricultural center due to its high concentration of citrus trees and other crops. In 1951, Lemon Grove voters approved incorporation as a city and it has since grown significantly with new development including a large shopping mall and several professional sporting leagues (MLB, NBA etc.). The downtown area still retains muchies from when it was only a small farming community with modest homes; many residents still dress informally for cultural purposes (known locally as "patchwork pants"). Lemon Grove is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 1,869 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern side of Kern County and south of Bakersfield. The first permanent settlement in what is now Lemon Grove was made by prospectors in 1859. A post office called "Lemon Grove" was established in 1865, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1912. The town got its name from the lemon tree that grew there. The first school in Lemon Grove was built on the site of an old millrace about 1896-97. In 1903, the town had six schools; two were for grade school students and four were for high school students. There were also three churches: one Baptist, one Methodist Episcopal and one Catholic. However, all but two of those buildings have been gone since then – the Methodist Episcopal church being replaced by a library and playground complex in 2001. Population growth led to increased land demand for farming and ranching beginning around 1910; so much so that some residents began to refer to Lemon Grove as "the agrarian community." One result was that many businesses closed down during prohibition (1920-1921). But other than a few scattered fires (mainly due to lightning strikes), little changed until World War II when things started to slowly improve with modest consumerism beginning to take hold among people who had seen their economy decline during prohibition years characterized by more rural living conditions with no access to modern amenities like electricity or water supplies after leaving mining camps near San Bernardino Mountains where such resources could be found .
