Lemon Grove is a small town in San Bernardino County, California. The population was 2,854 at the 2010 census. It is located on the slopes of Mount San Bernardino and is bounded by Interstate 10 to the south, U.S. Route 395 to the east, and Forest Service land to the north. Lemon Grove was founded in 1887 as Lemon Valley by John Waddell and his wife Jane Sayers Waddell. In 1923, Lemon Grove incorporated as a village under the name of Palm Springs. In 1951, it changed its name to Lemon Grove after donating its land for that purpose. The first post office in Lemon Grove was established in 1887, and operated until 1888 when it moved to Mt Palomar Mountain Station east of town. The first store opened in 1890 at 7th Street and Avila Avenue inside what is now The Lighthouse Museum which still stands today serving as a restaurant & gift shop. An irrigation ditch was built near present day Huntington Drive (now Business Loop) in 1912 for citrus growing; it continues to be used today for water distribution purposes only! In 1924, lemon culture became popular enough that Captain Charles Fenton Stevenson decided to open a lemon farmstead on 6 acres adjacent to his home on Bellemont Drive southeast of town along I-10 just south of Great Western HighwayToday known as Stevenson Farms this property still stands with 8 acre(s) leased back from Google Earth Viewing from downtown during peak hours you can see all 38 buildings including orchards/oranges trees up close making this one interesting place not likely ever visited by most visitors!
