Lemon Grove is a small, rural town located in Kern County, California. The population was 1,711 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Fresno–Merced metropolitan area. The name "Lemon Grove" comes from the sour citrus fruit that grows hereabouts and the grove of lemon trees which are common features of the community. The first settlement in this locality was made by Mormon pioneers in 1847. The post office was established at Lemon Grove on November 4, 1849, and remained in operation until it was discontinued on December 12, 1865. The first school in Lemon Grove were a log cabin built by Father Gabriel Gomez and students from Mission San José began using it in 1851-52. A second school building was soon erected and named for Mrs. Elizabeth Keyes (1812-92), mother of President Ulysses S. Grant (1824-93). Mrs. Keyes gave $5 to each settler who purchased land for a schoolhouse; these funds were used to build the present structure on Wabash Avenue near what is now State Route 168 near Interstate 5 south of town limits on February 3, 1853. In 1903 an addition to School #2 was added along College Avenue west of town limits when Mission San José High School became overcrowded and needed more space than could be provided at that location alone; prior to this addition there had been only one classroom and one office inside School #2 since its construction! One early resident who contributed materially to the growth of Lemon Grove were Judge Augustus Buell who served as Mayor from 1862 until his death in 1865 during the American Civil War; he also raised over $100,000 for war efforts including contributions to both Confederate General Robert E Lee’s army and Union General Ulysses S., Grant’s army! Another early contributor were Cyrus Hemenway whose store operated commercially here until about 1870 when he moved his operations into nearby Chico; he later donated land east of townlimits on Highway 395 for use as a park! It wasn't until 1898 when much agricultural production took place with orchards being planted around what are now I-5 Exit 109 (formerly known as SR 168) south of town limits before becoming industrial areas with tannery production beginning after World War II largely displaced dairy farming following passage through Agricultural Adjustment Act amendments increasing prices supports programs like Crop Insurance which have kept many small family farmers viable up through today's market conditions! In 1990, when Bakersfield became an independent city again, Lemon Grove annexed part of it from Pico Rivera so that its citizens would have their own police department and fire protection services.
