The history of the navy stationed at Lemon Grove began in 1887 when the United States Navy chartered a vessel, The Nautilus, to carry goods and passengers between Oakland and San Francisco. The ship served as a ferry for many years before being decommissioned in 1924. In 1939, the United States Navy reactivated The Nautilus and renamed her USS Enterprise. Enterprise served as an auxiliary cruiser until she was decommissioned in 1976. She was then used as a floating museum until she was sold for scrap in 1984. In 1985, USS Enterprise was donated to the city of Lemon Grove by its previous owner, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Authority (ARRA). Enterprise served as a library vessel until 1991 when she became the property of Lemon Grove Parks and Recreation Department. In 2002, Enterprise was given back to its original name by ARRA - USS Enterprise now serves again as a popular tourist attraction within Lemon Grove!

The US Navy would use these submarines in World War II as part of the Aid Station program. In 1951, the navy ordered two new destroyers, USS Dewey (DDG-78) and USS Halsey (CG-4). These ships were equipped with a helicopter landing platform that could be used to transport Marines or sailors to various duties onshore or offshore. In 1978, the navy ordered four more destroyer ships - USS Simpson (DDG-81), USS Wainwright (CWO-19), USS Porter (CVN-72) and USS Kidd (EGP-63). These warships were designed with coastal interception capabilities in mind. Today, the navy continues to deploy vessels gifted by other countries with different purposes. For example, in 2013, the United Kingdom gifted HMS Duncan to the US Navy as part of Project Maven. This ship is now used for oceanographic research along with other vessels donated by different countries such as Argentina and Australia.

The first lemon grove in Lemon Grove was established on the property of George W. Hattenbach. Today, there are over 120 lemon trees growing in Lemon Grove and its population is about 1,500 people. The history of Lemon Grove begins with the discovery of limes by Spanish explorers in 1769. Limes were very important to the Spanish colonists because they could make lime juice which helped preserve food and extend their lives for months or even years without spoiling. In 1829, José Antonio Mejía stumbled upon a large tree full of limes while exploring the area around present-day Los Angeles. This led to several other entrepreneurs starting fruit businesses in what is now Lemon Grove. In 1907, George W. Hattenbach founded Hattenbach Orchards & Fruit Company which became one of the largest citrus growers in Southern California. Over time, Hattenbach Orchards & Fruit Company grew into one of the most successful Orange County fruit companies ever created with assets that totaled over $1 million at its peak! From 1917 until his death in 1951, Mr. Hattenbach was an active part of both our local school board and civic life within our community! He has been called "the father" of our village! Today, we continue to place great emphasis on family values and community service through programs like Our Village Program which helps young people get involved with local organizations
Lemon Grove is a town in Orange County, California, west of Anaheim. The population was 3,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Anaheim–Santa Ana Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Lemon Grove" is most likely derived from a place called Lemon Orchard which was located near where the town now stands. The orchard may have been named for lemon trees that were found there. The original settlers in Lemon Grove were John and Anna Thomson who arrived in 1847 and erected a cabin on what is now Main Street. They were followed by other settlers such as James Murdoch and his family who arrived in 1849 and founded Murdoch's Store on Centre Street. In 1850, Lemon Grove was established as a small settlement with ten residents. In 1865, it became an agricultural community with over seventy-five acres of land irrigated with water from underground springs. By 1870, the population had grown to 150 people and by 1890 it had reached 300 people. In 1914, Lemon Grove incorporated as a village under the name of Hollywood Heights Village Incorporation No.: 15360). As Hollywood Heights Village Incorporation No.: 15360), it functioned as its own government with its own police department (and fire department) until 1962 when it merged into Orange County's city government under City Manager George Ahern Jr.. The post office reopened in 1917 after being closed for many years due to financial problems caused by World War I rationing regulations which did not allow mail delivery between towns within Orange County during that time period; however, postage rates continued to be collected centrally by the county post office until 1971 when they reverted back to local ratepayers On February 26th 1922 Main Street between Euclid Avenue and Flower Drive was renamed "Lemon Grove Boulevard" in honor of General MacArthur who headquarters were located nearby at 6800 Vineyard Road (now known as Forest HillsDrive). From 1922 through 1966 (except for 1942), main street was also known locally as "McArdle Boulevard". On October 14th 1952 facilities opened onMainStreetbetweenEuclidAvenueandFlowerDriveinhonorofGeneral MacArthurwhoheadquarterswere located nearbyat6800 Vineyard Road (now known asForest HillsDrive).From22252 through1966(exceptfor1942),main streetwas alsoknown locallyas"McArdle Boulevard".
