The history of the navy in Lemon Grove, California goes back to 1875. The first store in town was opened by J.W. Hildebrand, who also operated a mercantile business and a post office. In 1876, Captain John Bigham commissioned the USS Constitution from New York City as flagship of Commodore Charles Fenton's squadron on the Pacific coast. Some of the earliest gifts were given by Commodore Fenton himself, who had purchased an yacht called "Cedar Point" for use as his personal transport and homeport during his time commanding the fleet. In 1915, Lieutenant Commander Harry Waddell donated two submarines - USS Dolphin and USS Sturgeon - to serve with the Naval Air Station (NAS) Lemont based at Ventura County Airport. These submarines became known as "Waddell's Angels." NAS Lemont would later become one of Southern California's most famous naval stations with its wide range of missions such as antisubmarine warfare, aviation research and coastal defense; while also serving as a training ground for future navy officers and staff members. In 1978, Navy Unit Commemoration Day was established in honor of all UDT personnel who served in World War II aboard ships or shore installations ashore or afloat along Coast Guard cutter PCL-17 (CG-50).
