The United States Air Force has a rich history in Lemoore, California. The first organized air force was established on December 17, 1941 when the Army Air Forces activated the Lemoore Flying Training School. In 1942, theAAF created the First Tactical Air Command which controlled all U.S.AAF combat units west of the Mississippi River. In 1945, Lemoore was selected as one of two sites for Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron ( Fighter) of Ninth Air Force (later Eighth Air Force). The base became operational on November 1, 1945 as a provisional headquarters unit under Ninth AF. It soon became an operational fighter squadron with Boeing P-47 Thunderbolt aircraft and served continuously untilactivated on September 15, 1948 at Barksdale AFB, Louisiana due to budget cuts by Congress. Lemoore AAF remains active today as part of Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst with Tenth AF located at New York City’s John F Kennedy International Airport and Third AF at Alameda County’s Hayward Airport near San Jose serving NATO forces stationed in Europe and Pacific Rim nations including Japan and South Korea since 1951. The community was founded in 1887 by John L. Lemoore as a result of his purchase of Rancho La Brea from Manuel Nieto. From its beginnings, Lemoore has been a cattle rancher's town with some agriculture also being conducted; however, it is now one of Southern California's most popular tourist destinations for its natural scenery and history. Lemoore began as an agricultural community; but due to changes in ranching methods over time (from countrywide irrigation systems powered by canals to more open-air grazing), much of this land now contains wine appellations as well as other grape crops such as almonds and pistachios. Lemoore is a small community in Riverside County, California, located about an hour and a half east of Los Angeles. The population was 1,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greater Los Angeles Area. The mining town of Lemoore was founded in 1872 by George A. Smith and James Fenton. The two men combined their forces to start a gold mine here and discovered rich gold veins within weeks. In 1873, the two men organized what became the American Gold Rush era's first successful mining operation in California when they opened up the new Goldfield mine near present day Lemoore. By 1880, Smith had built his own mill to crush ore for smelting into coins that were sold at auction throughout America; one such sale resulted in $45 million being raised for charity across 30 days! After years of hard work and innovation by both men, the American Gold Rush era came to an end with discovery of other deposits nearby including claims at Sutter's Mill (now part of Claremont) and Springdale (now part of Perris). Mining operations reverted back to open air standards after World War II as resources became more scarce due to increased production from other mines around the state. However, today there are still some small-scale goldmining operations taking place along Barbera Creek which runs through Lemooretown Road north-south trending between old Noveria Mine workings on its left bank and Menlo Park on its right bank which has been leased by Fresenius KGaA since 1978 for underground exploration with plans to resume producing gold from 2019 onwards! In 1924–1925 construction began on what would become known as "The Gilded Age" high school which offered grammar school instruction among others until it opened its doors in 1926 serving grades 7 through 12 (). The building now houses Cal State Northridge’s Office of Student Affairs () . Lemoore was founded in 1839 by John C. Fremont and his family as a small community on the eastern edge of California. The town quickly grew, becoming an important stop on the wagon road between Sacramento and Yuma. In 1849, Lemoore became the capital of California when Governor Manuel Nieto moved the state capital from Stockton to here. After years of growth and development, Lemoore was renamed City of Commerce in 1907 after the city's first mayor, Arthur W. Crosby. A fire destroyed much of downtown Lemoore in 1923, but it re-opened two years later with new architecture and a more modern business district. The city has busy commercial districts today with several large employers including Kaiser Permanente and Wells Fargo Bank
