The California Coast Guard was founded in 1915 as the San Francisco-based High Water Patrol. The first Coast Guard stations were located at Yerba Buena Island, near San Francisco, and Point Reyes National Seashore. In 1916, the Coast Guard acquired its own vessel, the Cutter Hiawatha. The following year, the Coast Guard purchased a land grant at Lemoore Cove on Monterey Bay for use as its first station. Lemoore Cove had been used by Native Americans for centuries for fishing and hunting purposes. A fortification was built there in 1847 to support American settlers during their occupation of California. The fortifications were abandoned in 1848 and used as a storage depot until 1901 when they were replaced by a lighthouse. The present lighthouse was completed in 1903 and is one of the oldest standing structures on California’s coast. In 1932, the Coast Guard reactivated its high water patrol service under the name “High Water Patrol” with new headquarters at Benicia Harbor. That same year, it became an auxiliary unit of the United States Navy’s Naval Sea Service Reserve (NSTR). In 1951, NSTR merged with United States Customs Service to form United States Customs and Border Protection (USCBP). On July 1st of that year, USCBP became an independent agency within DHS with responsibility for all aspects of border security including law enforcement; maritime security; trade facilitation; public health; environmental protection; and economic development along America’s southern border

The Lemoore Coast Guard Station was established on July 1, 1912. The station was the first coast guard station in the town of Lemoore. The station was enlarged in 1932 and 1937. In 1948, the Lemoore Coast Guard Station became a lighthouse. In 1955, it became a harbor defense center. The harbor defense center was discontinued in 1978 and the lighthouse was closed on December 31, 1984.
Lemoore is a small town in the San Joaquin Valley of California. It is located about 25 miles (40 kilometers) east of Fresno and about 33 miles (51 kilometers) north of Bakersfield. The population was 1,539 at the 2000 census. The town name comes from Spanish for "a place where there are lemon trees." In 1868, the United States Cavalry under General Doniphan destroyed a band of Paiute Indians who had been terrorizing the area. This event helped spur development in Lemoore and other towns around the San Joaquin Valley. Today, Lemoore is home to a number of businesses including two hospitals, four schools, a library, and several restaurants and bars.
