Lemoore is a small city located in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 8,822 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bakersfield metropolitan area. The first people to live in Lemoore were Native Americans who had been living there for centuries before that. In 1853, John Sutter and his partners founded the Sutter's Fort Colony west of what is now Lemoore. They named their new settlement after Jean-Baptiste Lemoine, an early French settler in California. The town grew quickly because of its location and its access to water supplies from nearby Devils Lake and Mount Shasta. Lemoore was incorporated as a city on February 14, 1909. It became part of Kern County on January 3, 1912. The main industry in Lemoore during its early years was agriculture; however, it has since diversified into other areas such as manufacturing and services. In recent years, the city has become known for its agricultural products such as apples and grapes; however, it also produces cottonseed oil and soybeans. Today's downtown area is home to several restaurants and businesses including Pritchard's Market which opened in 1907 as one of the first markets in California; First National Bank which opened in 1911; KFC (now Chick-fil-A) which opened in 1923; Stroud Tire & Rubber Company which began production here in 1924; Red Lobster restaurant (now Red Lobster Resort & Casino); Lighthouse Pizza Place (later renamed Papa John's Pizza); Chevron gas station (now Chevron USA Inc.) ; among others .
Lemoore was first inhabited by the Ohlone people in the late 6th century A.D. The Ohlone were a Native American tribe who lived near present-day Redwood City and San Francisco Bay. In 1821, Captain John Folsom of the California Navy built Fort Point on the mouth of the San Francisco River, which served as a military post for about 20 years. In 1853, a party of 7 soldiers from Nevada under the command of Lieutenant Colonel James Henshaw explored and discovered oil reserves in what is now Lemoore County. With this discovery, Lemoore became an important economic center in California. The town started to grow quickly because of its new source of income and its location close to major transportation routes. By 1870, Lemoore had over 1,000 residents and was one of California's most prominent towns. However, during World War II, Lemoore was occupied by Japanese forces for three months during 1942–1943 as part as part of Operation Husky.
