Lemoore, California is a small town in the Mojave Desert located on the eastern edge of San Bernardino County. The population was 2,993 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greater Los Angeles Area. The town is named after Lemoore, Italy, where its first post office was established in 1887. The name was changed to Lemoore in 1912 because of its location on an old Spanish mission property. Lemoore began as a small agricultural community and became known for its citrus crops and other produce until the 1950s when it shifted to oil production. In recent decades, Lemoore has become a bedroom community for nearby San Bernardino County. The town's economy revolves around ranching and oil production; it has no retail or service sector businesses other than two convenience stores and one gas station. The only economic development near Lemoore has been a new housing development that opened up in 2009 which increased population by 10 percent over the previous decade-long period without any corresponding increase in employment or local output. Lemoore was founded in 1876 by a group of LDS pioneers. The town was named for Lemuel H. Grant, one of the original settlers and a member of the Board of Commissioners that carved out California from the Mexican territory. The grant was located on what is now the north side of State Route 17 about 9 miles east of Redding. The first store in Lemoore was established by Wm.H. Atchison and Brothers in 1877, and within a few years other stores had followed suit. By 1880, there were six stores in Lemoore and its population had grown to around 100 people. In 1885, LEMOORE HOTELS & CASINO opened its doors with $10 per night as its main draw card gaming system; it became one of the most popular gambling venues in California until it closed in 1984. In 1886, local farmers began canning crops at an early site near present-day downtown Lemoore; this led to the town's first industry - canning meat products which were sold at local shops and restaurants until Prohibition made canned food illegal in America in 1920). Cannery production continued until 1949 when it was replaced by farming after nearby Butte National Forest became available for agriculture due to increasing acreage devoted to forest management during World War II (the same land now lays claim to two large ski resorts). After years of decline, smallpox cases began afflicting residents of Lemoore during the late 1800s and early 1900s; however, these outbreaks generally stopped once vaccination programs were instituted throughout much of Northern California following pandemic-like outbreaks there earlier that decade (see History: Smallpox#Lemoore]. After several attempts over many years beginning around 1912 by real estate developers Harry Chandler and his son Willy Chandler unsuccessfully trying to purchase property along State Route 17 northeast from Redding for development into what would become known as "The Strip", Phillip Atherton purchased 4 acres northeast from Redding southward on Folsom Street between Cherry Grove Road and White Sands Boulevard for $7500 on November 13th 1912 from Mr. Jensen who operated a sawmill adjacent thereto on Clear Creek River bank.. This parcel lay just east or northwest across County Road RD 408 immediately south (west) of present day downtown Lemoore just off State Route 17 between Cherry Grove Road (now Simi Valley Boulevard) and White Sands Boulevard while also lying within what is today urbanized areas annexed since then by both City San Bernardino County including much peripheral rural unincorporated areas east/northeast thereof comprising part or all historically residential neighborhoods comprising parts or all inhabited places within those boundaries including Lemoore proper having been so aforesaid since time immemorial except such portions as have been annexed since said annexation taking place subjectto usual laws regulating annexation proceedings being duly complied with
