Since the first air force base in Lincoln was established in World War II, the Lincoln Air National Guard has played a significant role in America's aerial capabilities. The unit has been activated and assigned to different theaters of operations, both during peacetime and wartime. One of the most memorable moments for the Lincoln Air National Guard came during Operation Desert Storm when it was activated to support military efforts against Saddam Hussein's Iraq. Lincoln, California is a small town located in the Central Valley of California. The population was 3,872 at the 2010 census. It is part of Fresno County. Lincoln was founded by Isaac Newton and his wife Mary in 1847. They named it for Samuel Lincoln, an early settler in Fresno County. In 1897, the townsite was purchased by J.P. Morgan and moved to its current location on the east side of Fresno Bayou. The first post office was established in Lincoln on October 26, 1848, and served until May 6th, 1850 when it closed because of harassment from Native Americans led by Captain John Sutter with intent to remove all settlers from what would become Sacramento County and Northern Californias new Gold Rush region (the Central Valley). In 1853 Abraham Lincoln became one of the first residents of what would become Lincoln when he purchased land from Jens Jensen for $3 per acre (equal to $3600 today). This grant covered most of present-day Fresno County including parts of eastern Kern County as well as much of central San Joaquin County including present day Tulare County and much of modern day Madera County
