Lincoln returned home after his trip in 1865 but continued his work as an advocate for reformer policies in Illinois government before becoming president in 1868-1875. During these years, he worked hard on improving education for all Americans as well as creating jobs for American citizens living outside Chicagoans’ grasp during times of economic slump called The Great Depression .
