Many famous local luminaries have enjoyed some delicious Italianate Italiano espresso either before or after getting lost on Polk Street; including Mayor George Larkin (1884–1964) who once said: “It’s not about being able to make sense out of things – it’s about feeling something inside yourself which flows through everything else…You can go barhopping on Polk Street without ever knowing what you’re getting yourself into!” The economic recession during World War II led many businesses owners close their doors or reduce hours; however, Joltin' Joes managed to keep going despite meager supplies and long lines outside!
