The name "Lincoln" was given to him by General Edwin Mifflin during his visit there on November 12th 1861 while he was inspecting American forces besieged at Fort Yuma by Mexican troops under General Maximino Guerrero. In 1865, following the Battle of Grant's Mill north of Sacramento River Bridge, Ulysses S Grant ordered Maj.-Genarthur Jarratt to march southward through Fresno County into Placer County towards Bishop’s Ranch where General Jubal Early had deployed his main body against Grant’s left flank; only one brigade—the 1st Regiment Californian Infantry—was still attached to Early’s command at Grants millrace junction about two miles northeast of here when news arrived that Early had retreated with all his forces across the Sacramento River into Placer County; this brigade soon reached here and reported back to headquarters about 400 strong having destroyed over 100 wagons traveling behind Early's column; after some further investigation it became evident that this single regiment had not participated in or supportedEarly’s retreat but rather patrolled behind him while he moved forward unhindered! This colorful episode has become known as “The March On Sacramento." This incident led Ulysses S Grant to order Maj.-Genarthur Jarratt reassigned from front line duty near Grants millrace junction to take command instead thereofof Jubal Early himself with orders to pursue Early if possible—an event which resulted in one Confederate general being courtmartialed for disobeying orders! A charter was granted December 6th 1870 and Lincoln officially became “Lincoln City” upon its incorporation!
