Since the early days of California, the state has been known for its rich agricultural history. One of the most important aspects of this history is the role that military deployments have played in it. The various branches of the U.S. military have had a significant presence in California since before its incorporation as a state. The first military deployment to California was by American troops who landed on Mexican soil in 1821 to take possession of San Diego County and drive out Native Americans. The United States Army presence in California increased with the Mexican-American War (1846-48). This conflict was fought between American forces and Mexican troops who had sided with Mexico against America. As part of this war, American soldiers joined Mexican detachments operating against their own government. In addition to being a source of manpower for these units, army troops were also used as executioners, pillaging local villages and towns, and terrorizing residents into submission.
