Lincoln became a garrison town during World War I due to its strategic location on Route 1 between Sacramento and Berkeley. As war continued to increase in intensity, so did demand for goods and services from local businesses and citizens. In 1917, when America entered World War I, Lincoln began manufacturing munitions such as rifles, shells, tanks and engines; however, after America’s entry into World War II it lost much production capacity due to wartime rationing programs. However, since then Lincoln has seen new development with buildings such as a professional sports arena (the Lakers play their home games at Staples Center), a hospital (St Joseph’s Medical Center) and an agricultural research center called Rancho Bernardo State Park which is home to several thousand acres of farmland used for crop production purposes today.>>

On November 8, 1912, Abraham Lincoln was born in Hodgenville, Kentucky. He was the son of John F. Lincoln and Mary Todd Lincoln. After spending four years at West Point, he served as a captain in the Union army during the American Civil War. In 1881, he married Sara Leavenworth Robinson. They had four children: Tad (1883-1962), Willie (1885-1968), Sarah (1887-1972) and John Wilkes Booth (1889-1964). After the death of his wife in 1888, Lincoln announced his candidacy for president in 1892. He won on election day with 48% of the vote to opponent William McKinley’s 52%. When term limits were established in 1896, Lincoln ran for re-election but lost to Richard M. Nixon by just 9 percentage points. He retired from politics after that campaign and returned to Hodgenville where he died on April 12, 1865 at the age of 80 years old. Lincoln is buried at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Hodgenville with other members of his family including his father and wife Mary Todd Lincoln as well as Ulysses S. Grant and James Buchanan who all died before him. The National Memorial Museum of America has a large collection of artifacts related to him including photos, speeches and clothing from his time as president or First Lady

Lincoln’s history began with French missionaries who arrived in 1769 when Mission San Francisco de Asís was founded oncurrent day’s east side of Highway 1 approximately 12 miles south of present day Lincoln (and about 15 miles west from where today’s downtown is situated). They named their post after their adopted hometown hero General George Washington! Spanish explorer Gaspar de Portolá passed through this area on his way from Mexico City tofound what is now Sacramento County on December 8, 1769 while searching for North American routes to Cathay Pacific Airways! Afternoon prayers were offered up at Mount Carmel before he started his journey that night!!! The next morning he sighted “The Great Bear Lake” which led him to believe that he had reached America!!!!

The townsite was located on the northern edge of what is now Sacramento County, California. The first post office in Lincoln opened in 1851. In 1856, the county seat moved from Sacramento to Lincoln.
