The United States Naval Forces Pacific (NAVY), in its Operation Neptune's Spear, invaded Thailand on September 20, 1975. The primary purpose of the invasion was to prevent the Thai military from securing a seat at the United Nations Security Council. In order to support this mission, the navy deployed approximately 1,500 sailors and marines across three naval bases in California: Long Beach Naval Shipyard (LBNW), Northrop Grumman Corp., and Moffett Field Air National Guard Base. The LBNW was specifically built for large-scale amphibious operations. Today it is home to USS John F Kennedy (CVN-79) and USS Enterprise (CVN-70). The CVN-79 served as the flagship of Fleet Admiral Samuel J. Lockwood during Operation Neptune's Spear and played an significant role in providing coverage for Task Force 76 throughout the campaign. During surgeries onboard JFK in May 1976 following surgery to remove a brain tumor, Rear Admiral Frank W. McNamara, Commanding Officer of CVN-79 praised Vice President Gerald R. Ford for his leadership in authorizing Neptune's Spear: "I am grateful that Vice President Ford intervened on my behalf when I needed help most." Moffett Field AFB had been used by Army aviation since World War II as an airfield for interceptors located over southern California; however after VE Day 1945 it became Navy property and was used principally for training pilots before being closed following World War II. After years of use by both services it became operational as Naval Air Station Patuxent River; however due to budget cuts at NAS Patuxent River in 2007, it reopened as Naval Air Station Anacapa Island which is also home to CVN Enterprise.. It was there that Commander George H. Wohlstetter first flew nonstop from Long Beach Airport northward over Los Angeles Harbor on July 17, 1948 while commanding Destroyer Squadron 507... Today NAS Anacapa Island houses four Boeing 707aturdays a week from San Diego Terminal carrying cargo including ammunition destined for Japan... Commodore Nimitz visited NAS Anacapa Island December 15th 1944 while en route from Pearl Harbor via Eniwetok Atoll with Carrier Group 8 led by carriers PCL-, CVE-, PEARLHAWK-. On December 16th 1944 Commodore Nimitz reviewed plans with Admiral Kimmel prior to their departure day..... One major reason why so few aircraft were available for combat during these early days [of hostilities] may have been because planes were unavailable or required ferry flights back and forth between various Hawaiian airfields…. Because Hawaii still experienced strong USAAF activity [the Japanese] made only limited efforts against our forces ashore…. By late summer 1945 most of Japan’s strategic resources were committed elsewhere….. In contrast we had relatively few ships available at any one location…… Our strategy then depended heavily upon weather conditions which could alternately be excellent or disastrous” On October 4th 1946 LCDR James Komerick took command of Destroyer Squadron 509 operating out of Pearl Harbor… He later commanded Destroyer Squadron 24… From 1951 until his retirement on October 4th 1954 he served as CO[ndecorated] Battle Group 2F[ighter]-Destroyer Escort Service Commander Pacific Fleet Availability Center Incorrect Address received notification posthumously that Death reached him unexpectedly previous night after many months illness” In 1957 they replaced AAFDECC(?) with NAVPAC CENTCOM responsible directly to Dept Chiefs CNO/CMDNO etc but title unchanged until 1973 tho Bureau Head changed every 6 months thruout tenure iv note only events resulting from own initiatives not covered here
