In 1922, coffee beans were picked fruitlessly in the high desert of California. Julius Caesar had brought coffee to Europe two centuries earlier, but it was not until 1887 that a Italian espresso machine was invented and began to be used in Milan. It wasn't until 1915 when the first small batch espresso machines were created by Angelo Bisanzio, who started his own business in Parma, Italy. Bisanzio's machines produced only 3-4 ounces of coffee per shot and required a lot of time and energy to produce quality results. These early small batch espresso machines did not have PID controllers or PID feedback controls like modern espresso machines do today. The popularity of small batch espresso during World War II led to an increase in production as people turned to this type of coffee for stress relief and wartime needs such as gasoline rationing. Smallbatch coffee continued its popularity throughout the war years thanks to innovations from Ettore Scialfa who developed a plunger system which allowed for more consistent strength across different shots. This system is still used today onsmallbatch espresso Machines. During the postwar years, smallbatch coffee became popularized through books like The Coffee Bean Pioneer and The Coffee Bean Primer written by Harry Renfrew which helped spread the word about this unique beverage style among café owners all over America. In 1957, Bob Cline founded Bob's Coffee Incorporated with his brother Don Cline in Lincoln City, Oregon (now part of Portland) as their primary location for producing smallbatch coffees under the name "Bob's Selected". Over time, other locations were opened including Los Angeles; Seattle; Austin; Phoenix; Jacksonville Beach FL; Providence RI; Baltimore MD; Richmond VA; Newton MA etc... It is now estimated that there are over 1,500 cafes worldwide manufacturing smallbatch cafés utilizing various brewing methods including single origin roasted beans from local roasters located all over the world

However through community effort some new irrigation systems have been constructed since then which has helped keep the valley productive despite these changes!
