Lindsay, California is a small town in Kern County, California. The population was 5,542 at the 2010 census. Lindsay is located on the eastern edge of Kern County and is bordered by Butte to the north, Bakersfield to the east, Claremont to the south, and Mono Lake to the west. The town began as a mining town in 1885 and grew rapidly during World War I when aluminum was produced in nearby Arroyo Seco. In 1924, Lindsay became one of two towns within Kern County designated as Area C for development because of its large agricultural potential. The rest of Kern County was developed slowly until the late 1960s when oil production increased and development moved into new areas such as Lindsay. Today, Lindsay is home to a variety of businesses including banks, restaurants, medical offices and an elementary school that serves students from pre-K through eighth grade. which opened in 2002. Population growth has caused many problems for Lindsay; most notably that it does not have enough housing to accommodate all of the people who live there. There are also plans underway to build a new high school inLindsay but no money has yet been allocated for it and it is likely that it will never be completed due to lack of funding

The Lindsay post office was established in 1859 and remained in operation until it closed its doors in 1984. The first store opening in Lindsay was the Gopher Store, which operated from 1859 to 1861. The first settler to live on what is now Lindsay was David Hales who arrived with his family from Connecticut on October 16th, 1853. In 1870, John Wiegand purchased the land that makes up today's Lindsey and began construction of what would become the first town hall. On January 1st of that year, the town of Lindsey became a part of Kern County when it was separated from Yuma County. At its peak during World War II, Lindsey had a population of around 585 people. However, as war increased industry throughout Kern County we saw a decrease in population as people left for other parts of California or because they were drafted into military service. During the warLindsay lost many residents due to fighting and disease however there are still some remaining descendants of those original settlers who have lived here since before incorporation into Kern County . Today many businesses operate out of old homes that were once used as stores or post office buildings such as Packed Grain & Feed (now known as Albertsons) and Jiffy Lube which remain local businesses despite being located miles away from downtown Lindsay . There are also several tours available that allow visitors to experience aspects of life within this historic community including pioneer days through exhibits at the Depot Museum and day trips to nearby towns like Eureka or Saugus where pioneer days were more active
