Lindsay was founded in 1849 as an agricultural and ranching center on the north shore of San Francisco Bay. The industry that Lindsay has been known for since its foundation includes shipbuilding, aircraft manufacturing, and other transportation-related businesses. Today, Lindsay is a vibrant community with a rich history that can be seen through its many attractions and landmarks. The first permanent settlement in what would become Lindsay was made by six British sailors who landed on the site in 1849. The six men named themselves Captain John Furlong's Party and founded the town of Eureka on November 16th of that year. The name "Lindsay" comes from Norse explorer Hjalmar Linde's account of his journey from Iceland to North America in 1827 which refers to an island called "Lenni" or "Lingayen". In 1860, when gold was discovered at Sutter's Mill near Redwood City, Californians began searching for sites to build towns around it because agriculture could not provide enough food to support them all. A group of businessmen led by J.P Cook decided to build a town on land they had bought from the Native American chief Uluhatso at Happy Valley Road and Big Creek Boulevard south of where Eureka now stands. Cook named his new town Gold Rush County after the discovery but it soon became clear that no gold existed thereabouts; rather, it was thanks to prospectors who had found valuable copper and silver veins nearby that Gold Rush County flourished during its early years.
