Lindsay, California is a small town located in the Central Valley of California. It was founded in 1853 by George and Mary Lindsey, who named it after their infant son Lindsay. The Lindseys were farmers and ranchers until they moved to Lindsay in 1907. They built the first post office there, which opened in 1909. TheLindsay Lumber Company was founded in 1912 and became one of the largest lumber companies in the United States. In 1925, the Lindseys donated land for what is now West High School. The school opened its doors on October 1, 1926. Lindsay was incorporated as a city on November 3, 1932. It was renamed Lindsay again on July 7, 1951 following a proposal from Mayor John Cavanaugh to rename all localities with Hispanic surnames after American presidents or politicians (e.g., San Francisco Bay City). The naming change took place due to problems with getting proper cultural recognition for Hispanics in many other localities across America (e.g., Rochester Hills Michigan). Lindsay experienced rapid growth during World War II due to wartime production needs at nearby Lockheed Aircraft plants; however, it declined following the war's end and lost much of its population and businesses during the postwar period of rough economic times%. Since becoming an unincorporated community once again within the City limits on January 1, 1985, Lindsay has undergone significant growth including several new buildings erected along North First Street between Agricultural Drive and Fourth Street; addition of additional public acres around south side Park Road/First Street east of Highway 99; designation as a suburb by city officials; establishment of numerous new business districts including: Northgate Mall - home of Sears Holdings Home Store since 1984; First Colony Center - anchor store for First Colony shopping corridor stretching from Shopping Center at I-5 north to U-Haul truck lot east off I-5 near Sutter Avenue Lindsay's economy has been characterized as "relatively minor" due to its location near major metropolitan areas such as Fresno and Sacramento City Limits while also having limited access to resources necessary for sustained economic development outside these cities
Lindsay, California was founded on December 12, 1851 by John C. Lindsay and his wife, Elizabeth R. Lindsay. The town was named for the Lindsay family's farm in Canada. The first post office in Lindsay opened on January 3, 1855. The railroad reached the town in 1869 and made it a center of development. The population increased rapidly and soon there were school buildings, churches, a Masonic lodge and a brewery. In 1916 the city was incorporated as part of Santa Clara County
