The Livermore Army Depot was a training and storage facility in Livermore, California for the United States Armed Forces. It opened in 1945 and closed in 1989. The depot was used to store supplies and equipment for the United States Army during World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. During these wars, it also served as an army deployment center. In 1945, the United States Armies were deployed all over Europe. The main storage and supply depot for the armies was located at Livermore Army Depot. It had been built as part of Project Paperclip which aimed to bring American technology back to Europe after America's involvement in World War II. In 1949-1950, construction began on a new army deployment center called Egan Park which would be much larger than what was available at LivermoreArmy Depot. It would house up to 4 million square feet of space. Egan Park would serve as both a training ground for future US soldiers and an airbase where planes could be stored while being flown across country or around world. After opening in 1951-1952, Egan Park saw some heavy use by the US military during the Cold War years. This included deployments to Korea (1953-1955), Vietnam (1966-1975), Operation Desert Storm (1991), and Operation Enduring Freedom (2001). Due to its large size and importance within American military history, Egan Park is often considered one of America's most significant military facilities. The Livermore Valley is located within Livermore County and straddles the San Francisco Bay Area to the north and east. It has an area of 14 square miles (35 km2). The first Europeans to visit Livermore were Spanish missionaries in 1769-1770. In 1849, Alameda County was formed from parts of Contra Costa, Alameda, and Santa Clara counties. The town of Livermore was founded in 1853 by John Sutter as part of his effort to build the Central Pacific Railroad between Sacramento and San Francisco. Livermere University was founded in 1901 on land donated by George Hearn for education purposes only; it became a public institution later that year. In 1916, both universities merged to form UCLA; Livermere still remains as one of its constituent campuses. In 1957, the federal government acquired 640 acres (250 hectares) around present-day Livermore for development into the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency's (DARPA) "Los Alamos National Laboratory". This site would become one of two Department of Energy sites - Los Alamos would be designated as the primary laboratory for nuclear weapons research while DARPA's main lab for advanced computing and communication worldwide would be located adjacent at Oak Ridge National Laboratory - known respectively today as Oak Ridge National Laboratory Joint Services Center and Los Alamos University Hospital District Site #1 . DARPA's "Los Alamos" lab continued operation until 1992 when it merged with Lawrence Berkeley National Lab becoming part of UC Berkeley's new School of Earth System Science & Technology (SES&T). On 15 October 2009 Mayor Jerry Brown announced plans to create a $5 billion economic development district called "LiverMORE" which will focus on energy production technologies such as solar energy storage systems, wind power generation, agricultural production, downtown redevelopment—all within 1 mile (1 km) radius of each other across 10 blighted neighborhoods currently without any economic opportunity or access to basic services like clean water or grocery stores because they are zoned industrial or rural
