Livermore is a town in Alameda County, California, United States. The population was 56,421 at the 2010 census. Livermore is located on the eastern edge of Contra Costa County and is bordered by Hayward to the north and east, Oakland to the south and west, and Richmond to the northwest. The name Livermore comes from two Spanish words: "liver" (fat) and "muerte" (death). The first settler in Livermore was José María Borda in 1847. In 1870, Ignacio Carrera established a post office in what is now downtown Livermore. In 1872 J.D. Latham built a sawmill on Misery Creek near present-day Livermore Boulevard. By 1875 there were 200 residents in Livermoretown; it had grown to 1,500 by 1880. In 1902 George Wickersham organized a group of farmers who desired more fertile land for their crops than was available within Contra Costa County boundaries. They formed the Livermorne Land Company with $10,000 raised from local Merchants Bank notes that same year. With help from banker Hiram Maxim, they developed irrigated farmland around what is now downtown Livermerenda including part of what are now Downtown San Jose and Westpark neighborhood
