Gourmet Coffee History in Livermore, California began with the first cafe on Cherokee Street in downtown Livermore in 1931. The coffee shop was run by George W. Kapp and his wife, Nellie. They served only roasted beans from their own family of trees and made their own cream and sugar. In the 1940s, Harry Schultz opened a small café called Harry's Coffee Shop next to the library on Cherokee Street. He served a limited variety of coffee but always made it fresh in the morning before anyone else did. In 1951, Schultz passed away and his son-in-law Bob Newbold took over running the business until he too passed away in 1984. The first commercial roasting company in Livermore was J & B Roasters which was founded by Johnnie Barger and Bob Newbold in 1955. They roasted all types of coffee including Dutch roast, Guatemalan blend, Sumatra roast, Ethiopian black for Ethiopia Airways, etcetera). At first they operation was located at 318 Pershing Avenue (now part of P&M Casino) however they eventually moved to 1115 First Street where they remain to this day! In 1976 Gourmet Coffee Company opened up shop on Highland Avenue just east of I-580 near Livermore City limits which continued operations until 1979 when it relocated to its current location at 10251 San Ramon Rd., about 4 miles southeast of Livermore City Limits on State Route 168 between Piedmont Ave./Palo Alto Rd./Livermore Valley Blvd./Redwood Shores Dr./San Ramon/Northridge/Danville/Cupertino
