The first coffee beans were grown in Livermore by José Joaquin Torres y Linares in 1846. In 1865, Lorenzo Coffee founded the company that became known as Lorenzo's Coffee Roasters (later acquired by Starbucks). This company was responsible for marketing and distribution of medium-quality coffees throughout Northern California until 1974 when they merged with Jardin Trading Company to become Jardin Coffee & Tea Corporation. In 1984, Keurig Green Mountain began producing espresso drinks in Livermore starting with their first commercial model called the K-Cup®. At present, there are over 20 different brands under Keurig's umbrella worldwide including variations on single serve ersatz cups such as those produced by Dunkin' Donuts branded "K-Cups" which use pre-packaged ground coffee from various sources rather than fresh bean delivery. Today, much of the production still takes place within livermore proper although some beans are exported to other parts of CA and beyond for roasting or brewing purposes

In 1872 James Fenton established an oil refinery here for refining U.S. oil products from crude oils imported from Mexico and Canada; this helped spur an economic revival that lasted until World War II when production declined due to wartime restrictions on fuel supplies and other factors. Livermore was incorporated as a town on December 14, 1907 by act of the state legislature (the second such incorporation in Kern County).
