Livermore is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 33,691 at the 2010 census. Livermore is the largest city within Contra Costa County by both land area and population. The first Europeans to visit Livermore were Spanish missionaries in 1769. In 1839, John Cranch discovered gold in the hills west of Livermore after leading a party overland from Sacramento through what is now Fresno. After gold was found at Sutter's Mill on the north bank of the San Joaquin River in 1848, prospectors turned their attention to Livermore and its fertile hillsides for agriculture, but no significant discovery followed until 1862 when George Hearst established his logging camps near modern-day Livermore. A post office called "Livermore" was established in 1872, and remained in operation until it was annexed by Berkeley in 1906. The city logo features an orange spike with a yellow center that represents liverworts or other mosses that grow on trees around town. The name originated with James Jarrell who recommended it to mutual friends during a brief stay in town while he attended UC Berkeley Law School; Jarrell thought "livermere" resembled "leathermere". In 1916 William Randolph Hearst built him his own estate adjacent to present day Hearst Tower which still houses some of his personal belongings including his library and museum as well as two outdoor tennis courts used by Hearst himself between 1922 and 1966 according to historians John Pappas & Donatella Swerdlow). A new downtown movie theater opened in 1919 named after Laurel Canyon resident Lew Wasserman (founder of Hollywood film production company ABC Films) which helped spur economic development downtown especially around Memorial Drive which became known as "Laurel Canyon Boulevard".
