Since the early days of Livermore, California's national guard has been a part of the community. The Livermore National Guard detachment was organized on November 10, 1912. At that time, there were just a few hundred men in the Santa Clara County militia and only one rifle company in the entire state of California. The first soldiers from Livermore arrived to help man local defense posts during World War I. From then until World War II, they served as an adjunct to state militias and participated in many peacetime operations including anti-INS border patrols and relief work following natural disasters such as the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake. After World War II ended, the Livermore National Guard detachment continued its tradition of being a part of the community by providing security for events such as United States Presidential inaugurations and city fairs throughout central California. In 1979, elements of the Livermore Guard detachment deployed to Iran in support of Operation Eagle Bridge which aimed to reduce Iranian weapons proliferation. The unit has also been called upon multiple times since then to provide security for various international conferences and meetings held in various parts of Northern California. The National Guard is a volunteer paramilitary organization that is often seen as a necessary evil in the United States. The National Guard was established on September 25, 1792, by George Washington and it functions as an armed force of the United States government. The National Guard has been used in times of peace and during times of war. It currently consists of over 100,000 members across the United States. There are also specialties offered such as police protection or Search and Rescue services. There are two main types of membership for members of the National Guard: active duty and reserve duty. Active duty membership means that someone is always on call to fight if needed and reserve duty membership allows someone to take their time serving their country without having to worry about being called into service at any time soon. In addition, there are specialties offered for both active Duty and Reserve members such as SWAT team training or hostage negotiators skills. In order to become an member of the National Guard you must first have a high school diploma or equivalent diploma from an accredited school and be at least 18 years old with no criminal record dating back more than three years ago (unless you have been discharged from your last job). After becoming an NGP member you will need to complete an oath swearing allegiance to the President, Constitution, Vice President, Secretary of Defense (if applicable), Speakerofthe house (if applicable) etc., after which you will then be given a card with your NGP number on it which you can carry with you wherever you go!

In 1898, the California National Guard became an all-volunteer force with a state militia structure. A year later, the Guardsmen of Nevada were called to help suppress a labor strike there. The Guard was also mobilized for World War I, but did not serve in any combat missions. After World War II, the Guardsmen were withdrawn from active duty and divided into different Commands. These Commanders commanded their respective Regiments until they were disbanded in 1960.
