Livingston was founded on December 10th 1864 by John H. Livingston and his wife Anna P.G. Howell as a post office and wagon stop on the Butterfield Overland Mail route from Los Angeles to Redding. Early settlers were Masons who named their community after General James K. Polk, then President of the United States Livingston grew quickly due to its location, strategic routes for water transportation, and natural resources such as hunting and farming land that made it an important center in early California. In 1888, Livingston became the first incorporated city in San Bernardino County when it seceded from unincorporated areas east of Riverside Boulevard and south of Interstate 553 (now I-5). The growth of agriculture and tourism led to incorporation of other towns around Livingston including Fillmore (1902), Donnelly (1905), Centreville (1911), Biggs City (1920), Rancho Mirage (1925), Cathedral City (1928) and Northridge (1945). The heyday of Livingston was during World War II when it became an important manufacturing town with construction companies like Lockheed Aircraft Corporation erecting factories that produced munitions for war efforts such as B-17s bombers or naval gunfire torpedoes. However, after the war ended Livingston experienced decline with many businesses closing down or moving away because they could not compete with larger metropolitan cities like Los Angeles or Redding which had greater economic opportunities. Livingston is located in the Central Valley of California, about an hour and a half from Sacramento. The town was platted in 1853 by John Sutter, who founded the settlement on his farmstead near modern-day Davis. By 1870, Livingston had a population of 435 people. In 1907, Livingston became part of Pasadena County and received its own post office. The population dropped to just 100 people by 1920, but grew again to over 1,000 in 1930 when it joined the new San Bernardino County. In 1940, Livingston merged with neighboring unincorporated community of La Crescenta to form what is now known as La Crescenta City. Livingston has experienced two waves of immigration since its establishment as a small town: first wave arrivals came during the Gold Rush era (1849-1850), while later waves arrived during World War II (1946-1948). Spanish settlers were the first group to arrive in Livingston; they began arriving between 1849 and 1853. Afterward, Mexicans began coming streaming into the area as part of larger waves flowing into California during the late 19th century because of new opportunities for work and citizenship available under Mexican American leader Porfirio Diaz’s Propaganda Movement. In 1908, after years of debate among local officials about whether or not to establish a post office at Livingston because there was no mail service available closer than Sacramento or Visalia due to lack of infrastructure at that time (and also because there were few residents living within one mile either side of town), voters passed an ordinance authorizing a post office at Livingston with mailing privileges only for residents within one mile radius along both sides of Railroad Avenue. The first official home delivery letter from Los Angeles arrived at 5:15 A.M., on July 10, 1908 – more than 10 years before USPS introduced ZIP codes! All through much OF THE 20TH CENTURY LA CRESCENTA CITY HAD ONE MAILING POINT BUT IT WAS N/A FOR ALL THE ROUND TOWNS IN SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY INCLUDING LIVINGSTON until 1926 WHEN THEY MADE AN ADDITION TO THEIR POST OFFICE WITH ZIP CODE 91723
