Livingston is a small town in the San Joaquin Valley of California, about 20 miles east of Fresno. The population was 8,873 at the 2010 census. It is part of Fresno County. Livingston's name comes from Spanish for "Large Meadow" and its first post office was established on October 15, 1882. In 1777, Capt. Gabriel Moraga founded Rancho Buena Vista de los Cahuas (Buena Vista Ranch), which encompassed present-day Livingston and some adjacent areas now known as Nacoochee and Fallbrook. The Moraga Adobe remains the oldest standing building in Livingston and one of its most popular tourist destinations with its historical architecture and interpretive exhibits. The United States Department of Agriculture started grazing sheep on what is now land that became part of Livingston in 1884 when it bought 3,000 acres (1 km2) from José Castro Moreno. In 1898, the USGS listed this area as part of the San Joaquin Valley Agricultural Districts plan which provided for continued operation by local governments to provide markets for agricultural products within their borders In 1902, a post office called Nacoochee was established at the edge of present-day Livingston after a rancho owner named Narciso Gomez donated Post Office Box No. 6 to Congress in memory of his late father Francisco Gomez who had served as a delegate from Nacoochee to the Mexican–American War Meets certify orders received during said war The first store opened here in 1903 under business name Eureka Bros., operated by Wm Hetrick & Sons By 1915, there were five stores in total: two general mercantile stores open daily except Sundays; one hardware store; and three restaurants: One Italian restaurant serving fresh food items only; One Chinese restaurant with Americanized menu serving all types Americanized foods such as Peking duck or General Tso's chicken In 1919 an express train derailed near Millstream Avenue bridge killing nine people including four firefighters train engineers Jens Christiansen (1886-1964), Ole Hansen(1906-1987) and Arne Christiansen (1910-2001) while they were working on repairs The Mills Stream community began developing around this time thanks largely to resident Alma Hanson who also initiated efforts to obtain water rights from nearby landowners
The history of Coast Guard gift donations goes back to the early days of the Coast Guard. The first donation was a bagpiper’s harp, given in 1894. A tarpaulin and malediction were also given in that year. In 1916, a small boat was donated which became known as the “Alaska” and it served as the Headquarters for CoastalGuard from 1916-1960. In 1961, the Headquarters moved to Seattle, Washington and then to Newport Beach, California in 1966. In 1978, another small boat was donated which became known as the “Whitney” and it served as Headquarters for both US Coast Guard Districts Atlantic and Pacific from 1978-1991. In 1992, an additional large boat was donated which became known as the “George Washington” and it served as Headquarters for both US Coast Guard Districts Northeast (New York) and West (Oregon). It is interesting to note that this particular donation came about after President George H.W. Bush decided to name part of his military base at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam after US General George Washington. (more…)

Livingston is a small town in the San Joaquin Valley of California. It is located on the east bank of the Sacramento River, about 20 miles (32 km) northeast of San Francisco. The first white settlers arrived in 1859, and by 1871 Livingston had a school, post office, cotton gin, and store. In 1883 the railroad reached Livingston, and it became an important community with its own railway station. By 1907 Livingston had a population of 350 residents. However, during World War I Livingston was bombed by Japanese bombers, and its buildings were destroyed. The town has since recovered and today has a population of around 100 residents.
Livingston, California was founded in 1859 by J.D. Livingston and his wife Catharine. The town became a county seat in 1872, and it is the home of the USC campus.
